*Rickashay's 04' Tundra* - A build of Compromises

That's quite the list of work you've got coming up! What are your plans for cleaning up the frame?

Well I might have just created MORE work for myself and a longer wait time for those Fox's. Details in a few days....

Cleaning the frame just with a wire brush wheel on my grinder to knick off the small amount of surface rust and then a rust coat primer of some sort, followed by a few coats of rattle can. I have very small amounts of surface rust but at the very least will keep my OCD in check with it not being visible. haha

...more work? Did you buy that long travel kit for sale in the classifieds on tundra solutions?

Well, an interesting couple of days! I found a BNIB Camburg kit for a very reasonable price. I figured, seeing as how my coilovers still hadn't shipped, that I could probably just have them swapped to the LT version for no extra cost. I made the call and was ready to purchase when I realized the frame mounts on the new Camburg LT kit are 1" LCA uniballs. Sounds great for baja racing but not so great for the Canadian climate and road salt. Unfortunately I just couldn't justify the amount of maintenance that this would entail, so I emailed the seller and reluctantly backed out.

That being said, it looks like I'm going to be working with The Gear Shop more in the coming months. Let's just say the LT coilovers are still on order... I'll have more details (and pics) when it further unfolds.

Hmmm...If not Camburg UCAs, and not TC UCAs, and you are concerned about road salt/uniballs, does that mean LRs? ;) ... OR are you truly going all out with a SA swap?

4 Link, coil overs, and a solid axle perhaps????/

No, not going SAS. I thought about it heavily but in reality, thats part of the reason why I ditched the LX450. I wanted something more comfortable on the road and for longer style trips. I rarely had complaints about the capability of my IFS 3rd Gen 4Runner, so a mid travel setup would suite me fine on the Tundra. BUT I just came to terms with what I wanted out of the build and the ultimate IFS setup. The truck currently functions fine as-is with the old and faithful Bilstein setup (still amazes me how nice it feels for a $350 shock package) and the 35's. I feel like going mid travel would have been a part-time affair and I would have just ended up ditching it for long travel in short time. Doing it once, and doing it how I want it - there it is... I'm going LT.

I'll be running a Total Chaos +3.5" kit (boxed arms) with the Fox 2.5" c/o's, resi's, and CDC's. I'm still not rushing into it but just going to keep enjoying the truck for how it functions now and collecting the LT parts over the next couple months. Besides, it's going to be another "5 week" build time for the new Fox's..... and when I read that between the lines, that means like 10-12 weeks if past performance predicts future occurrence.

So... whats the point of LT over a mid travel when your not racing/jumping, and more mud/snow/rocks?

More articulation.

Build looks fantastic so far Addison! Looking forward to more wheeling pictures. One day I'll make it up there and wheel with you and Intruder.

Since I just spent a ton on armor all around. I was looking at going LT. As well but I don't see me getting much use with it. It's more of a want than need lol. Going to Moab at the end of May

Connor, below, nailed it. A lot of the guys I wheel with have 2nd Gen Tacomas with long travel (+2" per side) and it's really the ultimate setup for articulation second only to a proper solid axle conversion. However, retaining the IFS keep the truck very driveable and should be a lot of fun on the logging and fire roads. The TC kit is 3.5" wider per side so it also increases the stability of the truck in off-camber situations. The downside (in my opinion) to doing long travel in more or a overland/crawler purpose build, is that I'm probably going to also need to run fiberglass which will increase the body width of the vehicle. The track width may also limit my ability to run certain extremely tight trails. The factory suspension cycles ~8" of travel. With the TC kit, it will cycle 13".

More articulation.

Thanks Connor. I do need to get more wheeling pictures! I haven't been out much as it seems every weekend I'm not working I am in the garage trying to work on the truck. I'm getting close though... just need to get the diffs pulled and sent away, but after that I'll be able to get out and do some wheeling. I'll be collecting the parts for LT for a few months so I don't expect to have it going until spring.

That would be super cool if you came up this way, it's pretty awesome as your recent trip to Banff probably hinted. Hell, even meet me half way... I was hoping o get done and run some Wyoming trails (Monte's area) one of these days. I'll also be headed to Moab again in the next couple years. We should keep in touch and try and get a meet going. It would be cool to meet up with some of the other T4R guys too.

I hear yah. I could definitely get by with a mid travel setup, but it would be a ticking bomb until I pulled it and went to LT, so why not do it right the first time. Jealous on your armor, its turning out excellent and that is the next big wall I'm going to face with mine. I do wish I had sliders right now though to tie me over.

haha yah the tub wasnt too bad. You should do it! Now with the LT and the tub, I can swap to 37s in the future. haha doubt I would but...

I love this truck.

Hey! Glad your still keeping an eye open. Hows your Tundra doing?
