I will be following this build very closely. Your plans are fairly close to mine, however I already have the child mod done. A single rear facing seat fits in the AC without hindering the front seats (Chicco Keyfit 30). I think once we are able to turn her around it will be even better. To me the size of the AC is perfect for a 3 person family. If you have 2 kids, things might start getting tight.

Is it possible to swap in a 8" front diff from a 05-07 Tundra?

I too like the size and it can probably work with 1 child. I have two dogs (one is 75 lbs and the other 20lbs) and they will be in the back when traveling. Not that I'm comparing children to dogs but just saying I need to make the space behind the rear seats useable, although for a slightly different cause. ;)

I'm sure you could... but it's not going to bolt up and I actually think the new Tundra front diff is a 9"??. The widths would be totally different and would require custom front everything. You'd probably be better swapping in the entire front end including CV's and control arms. I think an easier (but still very custom) would be to swap in the 8" (I know this is an 8" version...) IFS diff from the 2nd Gen Tacoma/FJ/4Runner.

Thanks for following! Just need to get on the phone now and get some parts coming!

I'm so stoked to see this come together finally! I've always loved your 80 and it almost made me want to trade my Tundra for one but I just can't give up on the truck part.

Have you thought about going with fiberglass fenders in the front? I've seen a few for our 1st gens and it seems like an easier way to get 35s under the front.

The Tundra is going to be nice; on road, off road, at work, in the Koots.. nice-nice-nice.

Ahh, kids, don't worry about it too much- they'll fit, they're bendy... otherwise you end up driving a Tundy-Crew or some huge minivan..
Our Taco DC does great with two little ones and a 65lb lab- and we're still a few weeks away from both forward facing goodness.

I was under the impression that all Tundra's 05+ had the 8" up front. I know the newer 07+ have the 9.5 or 10.5 out back. I would think the width on a 05-06 Tundra 8" front would be the same as your 04, not positive though. I remember doing a lot of research before buying my 05 a few months ago. I knew I wanted to get the stronger front diff and was researching how hard a swap it was and if it was even possible. I stopped because I found an 05.

*Well the later Tundra's definitely got a 9", not sure what year it started and if it was across the board.

**It looks like all 07+ (2nd Gen's) have the 9" front. I can't find anyone online that sells anything but 7.5 (front) gears for a 1st gen. Do all 1st gens have a 7.5? I'm so confused.

As others said, can't wait to see your progress. One thing I did not like about removing my rear seats in my tundra is it got really loud. It's amazing how much sound the rear seat absorb. I even had my whole truck sound deadened and it was hard to talk. But there was a lot of room when the seats are removed, you could easily make use of it.

Thanks! I have thought about glass.... but I would only go that route if I went full long travel, and even then, only if I couldn't make the factory stuff work. Glass has its pros and cons. It can sometimes take some massaging to fit properly, but it does give additional wheel well clearance. However I am going to have to tub the firewall regardless and the glass will ad 3.5" per side to my already fat Tundra. It's already going to be a squeeze getting this thing down my local trails so keeping it on a diet is a HUGE priority for this build.

Haha no no no I will avoid the minivan at all costs. 200-Series have back seats dont they? Hell maybe one day I can convince the soon-to-be wifey that an Audi S4 Avant would be a good family hauler. :D I almost picked up a new TC SB Taco this spring.... had the papers done up and everything but I chickened out cause I didnt want car payments! But it is such a great platform especially in the DC version....

Yah definitely 7.5" front diff in all first gen Tundra's. We're stuck with the older drivetrain unfortunately.

Good to know. I had suspected it would be loud but ignorantly assumed some sound deadener would eliminate the issue. Glad you chimed in... I'll probably cut a 1/2" sheet of MDF or something out and have it carpeted or something with some sound deadener applied to the cab itself. Hopefully retain a quiet cabin and gain the needed space.

I very much look forward to the developments here! Take it slow so we can take notes ;)

Hahah thanks, I'll try to document as best as my time allows. I think this platform is a can of worms waiting to be opened.

Just ordered:
- Fox Extended Travel 2.5" Coilovers with Resi's and CDC Adjusters
- Total Chaos UCA's
- Total Chaos Spindle Gussets
- 3 leaf progressive AAL (same as the Wheelers AAL): will be using this short term to mock up rear suspension, will eventually go to a custom Deaver pack when the rear is dialed in.
- SCS F5's with 3.5" BS
- Retrax Tonneau Cover (used from a local CT4WD member)

I've had my double cab tundra since 2006, best truck I've owned and not selling her soon! Darrell waltrip edition with the fancy exhaust wheels and grill. I put bilstein coilovers and 5100 in the rear. Hoping to have my camburg UCAs I stalled soon. Cab high shell with bedrug liner, and 285/65r18 nitto trail grapplers.
Enjoy, these trucks keep going and going and going....

Welcome to Club Tundra.

When you do your lift, seriously consider a diff drop kit and replacing your front boots that are close to the diff. When old stiff boots get cocked at an angle that joint next to the diff will get compromised. I used the Off Road Solutions black softer compound boots which solved a serious issue with chucking grease. Others have just used the hose clamp mod but I prefer the approach I employed. See my build thread for details.

Looking forward to seeing where you go with this... 1st Gens rock!

I'll second that. I'm running Kartek Bates 930 boots.

Thanks for the reminder on the boots! I had looked at those before. I actually already had to re-clamp mine after I did my Bilstein levelling kit due to spitting grease although they have been pretty good since then.

Doesn't look like the new drivetrain is any good anyways. I rather stick with the 7.5. Don't hear them fail much if at all?

Yah the 4Runner/Taco guys have busted them for sure. I'll probably be more inclined with the big tires but I think if you wheel smart and not with the skinny pedal, I should be able to hold onto the front drivetrain. The ARB in the front should strengthen the it up a bit too. Just gotta be careful when I lock that thing up!

I'll second that. I'm running Kartek Bates 930 boots.

Also looked into those! Thanks for the tech gents!

Had a not so busy evening at home...

Ordered

- Diff drop
- SS front and rear brake lines
- Poly Steering Rack bushings
- Rear Brake prop. valve bracket

and courtesy of above:
- ORS Inner boots (x3) hope to pick up 1 or two spare CV's from the pick and pull and have one booted with the good inner boots.
