Thanks a lot! Hopefully you can find some useful information somewhere amongst the verbage. HA

UPDATES

Spent the last couple days working on the Cruiser instead of going out to the mountains. I guess I just decided that I need to start putting in more time on the LX to have it ready for Moab in May. Sacrifices.

IS300 Steering Wheel Installed:

Do you think that this steering wheel would bolt onto the 3rd Gen 4Runners as well? My wheel is very weathered and I would like to replace it. This could be a great option, especially with winch controls built in.

I am almost positive that the spline count will match up. The airbag issue might be a different story though and I cant promise anything there, but I'm sure it would bolt in.

That airbag adaptor harness I ordered from Toyota fit perfectly to connect my IS300 airbag to my LX450 clock spring and probably would work for your 4Runner too. However I think the bags differ in resistance in my case as my airbag light stays on even when the harness is connected. I'll need to troubleshoot a bit more.

Keep in mind you'll probably need to use your 4Runner cruise control stalk as well. I had to make my LX450 one fit as the wiring is different on the IS300 one. You could probably find a wiring diagram but I just clipped the steering wheel button wires and used my LX450 cruise stalk. Later, I'll just wire the steering wheel buttons directly for winch controls. I'm also starting to think I might run an LED light bar off the other steering wheel buttons. That way I can run them on the highway and easily switch them off as soon as I see oncoming traffic.

Also, when in May are you headed to Moab? I am planning on going down the second week of the month or so. I have finals the first week...

Well as I prepare for Moab next month, things are slowly turning from a pile of parts in my garage to something more substantial. I am picking away at the "to-do" list hour by hour as I find time. This weekend was allocated to getting my sleeping platform sorted and onto the right track. Not doing drawers at this point in time, although I suspect I will be adding an upper layer in the future. Right now I've got sleeping for 1 (and maybe the dog?) covered as well as some dedicated storage for pieces that will follow me even after I make basecamp and head to the trails.

I used 3/4" plywood with an Okoume veneer. The finish is very nice and I liked the color. The 2x4 is cedar for some contrast and grain factor.

As you can see, I countersunk some D-Rings in the sleeping area to allow for storage when Im not catching Z's. Not pictured, is the Hi-Lift which sits perfectly behind the front seats and is captured in place by the platform. You can access the Hi-Lift from either side and yet the weight is being kept low and the mass is contained so in case of a rollover, it won't eject and remove one of my limbs.

Once I reach the point of final assembly (after staining the wood) I will also be installing my ARB dual compressor in the passenger rear area. If you look close enough you can actually see the harness peaking out of those rear vent louvers. This should provide me fairly quick access to my air source via opening the hatch. I'll grab more photos of this once I get it assembled.

Super super excited for this mod - The ARB Fridge/Freezer. I've been dreaming of having this essential piece of camping gear ever since I got into wheeling, finally it's about to come to fruition.

While I was at it, I FINALLY installed my Slee belly skid/transmission crossmember. This thing is super beefy and provides some needed coverage under there.

A few poser shots from the drive to my house (just moved but my garage is a short 2 hour commute... lol):

When are we running Crowsnest? Didn't get a chance last year. Now I really want to see Tom in person!

I love the simplicity of your cargo/sleeping deck. I'm planning on doing something very similar. Quick question, How did you make your template for cutting the plywood? The contours are perfectly matched and spaced with the cargo interior sides... very well done.
That ARB fridge/freezer is just waiting for some cold ones.

Hey, nice rig! I have a 3rd gen myself and have looked through your 4Runner build many times, which I also loved. I read through this build and I don't think you covered it, but can you give a comparison between the LX and your previous 4Runner? The biggest thing I'd like to know is how the size/weight affects off roading. Also, does the LX feel underpowered (compared to how the 4Runner felt)? Any other info would be great. I'm debating whether to keep my 4Runner or pick up an 80 series. Thanks!

not to hijack, but you should always upgrade to an 80 series. If there is an 80 series anywhere in your equation, that is the right answer.
