Roof load on FJ Cruiser

A Maggiolina tent plus two adults and a futon weigh in at about 550 pounds. Can the FJ's roof withstand that much static weight?

I can't say for sure, but I'm going to guess yes you'll be OK.

I know that I had two adults (including a 300lb man) on the rack-less roof of my FJ and it was relatively fine.... :friday:

So, I'd figure that if this is all that happens under that kind of load in the most ridiculous way possible, then loading it up in a reasonable fashion will totally fine.

The main issue you'll run into with the stock roof rack are the stock crossbars. They're rated at 115lbs (give or take). You'll want to replace them with something like a yakima or thule steel bar, then secure your tent to that. The roof rack itself is made of alluminum, but extremely sturdy.

I'd love to see some pics when you get it all setup.

Roof rack ratings are dynamic. The FJ Cruiser with Thule 450 Crossroads feet and standard Thule load bars (LB50 or LB58) on the port installed rack is rated at 165 lbs. dynamic. No static loads are published but consider these points...

1. Dynamic loads have to do with COG, braking and handling at speed. The tent weighs well under the dynamic load limit of 165 lbs., even with gear inside.

2. All modern vehicles are engineered to withstand a roll over - far more weight than your tent and occupants.

3. We have fitted quite a few Columbus and Maggiolina tents on FJCs - and nearly 1000 tents on vehicles of all types - never had a problem with the static load of tents and occupants.

Just to echo Mike, the FJC can lay on its lid without collapsing, so you will be ok with rack, tent, and two people.

Old thread, just ran across this in a search for Maggiolina.
Indeed the FJ stock rack can handle the weight.
The FJs rack will support I would say over 500 lb.
My tent weighs:
128 lb Maggiolina AirLand medium
220 lb Me ('eh, working on that :D )
010 lb sheets, down comforter
015 lb duffel bag full of clothes
025 lb Camping Labs awning
-------
398 lb total give or take

Not once was I concerned when sleeping in it.
It was as stable as a rock.

Wow, old thread...

I guess I'll chime in with a more legitimate experience. I've had my 300lb ***, a more typically sized person, in an RTT with three Jerry cans thrown up there for good measure... a total likely around 600lbs with no issue.

Have slept in the RTT (total there a little under 500) for about 25 days... no problems.

Just to add more to an old thread.

Me and the missus slept in the RTT for 5 weeks during our last trip through NWT, YT, and Alaska.

No problems whatsoever.
