Hello I posted this in trip planning section also but wanted to include it here incase others have had some ideas. Need help with a solution for a roof top tent but can't spend over $2000 to buy one. A 4 season tent which is used on everest is only 500 why is the rtt so much? has anyone developed some sort of platform for the 100 series??

FWIW I paid $1365 3 weeks ago for a brand new ARB from Amazon and shipping was free due to prime membership. That would give you some leeway with a rack or something but not much. I also replied in your other post about the differences in tents and price.

Wow! If $2K is your budget, you can get a VERY NICE setup. We looked long and hard for ours. An Ironman4x4 roof top tent with an annex room is currently $1,195 and their awnings are around $250 depending on the size. Here's the link: http://www.ironman4x4.com/html/rooftop_tent.html. Ironman4x4 is a relatively new player in the Australian and U.S. off road markets, and they have impressed us with their quality and pricing. They're aren't that many competitors in this market, but the competition seems to be heavy.

We recently bought ours through ACC Toyota Lexus & Land Cruiser and couldn't be happier with it. There are other quality brands out there, and we could not see any quality difference between ARB, Cascadia, Mombassa, etc. In fact, the measurements and tent styles are exactly the same in most of the models. Here's ours mounted on a small 1/4-ton trailer with some pictures showing the tent folded.

^^^^^ I did a lot of research first of the year and the best deal going was the tepui brand as far as price vs. quality. Mine was $899 plus shipping of $150. It is supposed to be exactly like the ARB. You can always wait for a used one to come up for sale and hopefully be local to you. In the last year there have been some deals on here for the higher quality, heavy canvas ones. Nobody seems to want to ship them though, aggravating.

thanks for the input; amazon seems to be the best price so far because fo the free shipping but I think its an older model of the art; hillbilly just got one and awaiting to see his opinion on the quality etc.

Are you also budgeting for a decent roof rack to handle the RTT? I may go RTT in a year or two (still happy ground camping). I think I'm still going to get a Gamiviti flat rack, which will be $6-700, so take that into consideration.

Need help with a solution for a roof top tent

simple, invest in the best rack you can afford, like a Hannibal, then ad treated and sealed plywood, then ad your backpacking tent. spend the $ saved on a nice awning over the rear or side.

I'm serious, give this some thought. Hannibal has a nice aluminum ladder that hangs off any rail side or rear. The RTT design has it's drawbacks. I like mine but there are times when it is not at all ideal.

Just be sure to get a rack platform larger than the tent footprint.

thanks jwestpro I actually was really considering this because of the cost of the rtt etc. but like others have stated the folding aspect etc. The reason we want off the ground is that we had an experience with a bear so no tents on ground anymore. I know other areas we are going to have no bears but we are planning the setup from the get go of the trip. any and all info or input is appreciated.

Just got my Tepui Kukenam last weekend and tested it out. It was awesome in every aspect. The staff onsite where I picked it up in Santa Cruz are very cool folks and helped install it. The owner was there, too. Great guy.

I think I need a bigger truck!
check into the CVT lineup...great prices and every one comes with a vestibule included in the price. they are well made and there are currently 4 different modelt in a soft tent. Bobby at CVT is a great guy and would work with you on shipping im sure.

close to your price range.
