Roof Top Tents, what is all the hype about?

Hey Andy, go to a foam shop and ask to try out the foam they use for boat cushions, they are mold resistant and tend to be higher density.

Thx, next time we head to Kelowna we'll have a look around. Boat shops here in Revy are a bit thin on the ground.... plenty of snow though :Wow1:

Jim, I might be able to make another version when I have some spare time with a Jeep. Maybe a Jeep image like this with some cleanup

having had the opportunity to use mine in adverse (rainy and frigid) conditions now i would say that the hypre really comes when it is time to break camp in the rain. I pull the pillows out and fold it with two sleeping bags and a comforter in there then zip on the cover and leave while everyone else is on their hands and knees rolling up soaking wet tents.

Finding value in an RTT is really dependant upon your specific needs/adventures. I know that one can find better quality traditional tents for less than 1/2 the price but you have to keep in mind that you're buying from a niche market, and the pricing reflects that.

Well said sir! But they should also take into consideration that most people who would be interested in such a set up are not idiots, thaty would probably have the skills to build a box and put just about any tent inside it and mount it on a roof, with supports for a couple hundred bucks not counting the price of the tentage. So, that would put a $450 Northface Moutain 35, all weather tent with interior assessories (bags, netting, fly) with your own contraption at under a grand. I'm sure I could build a paltform with an appearance fitting any G Wagon. All that would be missing is a cool sticker, but you might get one from Northface. :coffeedrink:

60 nights at motel 6 and the AirTop RTT is paid for.

My interest in the RTT is pure convenience - as lazy as I am that is priceless. Having said that, 3k is steep, but what is wife approval factor worth?

questions

A few questions about RTT.

1. do they all have a rain fly? is it permanently installed?
it looks like royal pain to put on with tent height.
2. I need one for family of four. which one has 4 sided annex
and floor?
3. which one has most comfy mattress?

Replied in your other thread, but briefly:
Yes, all have a rainfly, butnot all are created equal.
Look at the tourer-style models, but as commented in the other thread, height may be an issue.
That's going to be very subjective. You'll have to try them out.

Not all have flys, Autohome Overcamp and Overland are a couple of example without. For the ones that do have them, they self deploy so height isn't a factor. As Bunduguy noted, there are different designs out there.

A Mombasa and similar Covered Entry models have a four sided with floor Annex. Two in the tent, two on the floor depending on size. I'm not familiar enough with all the high-end model to know which have four walls with floor annexes.

Mattress is subjective and weight dependent. I'm about 165, I find a Mombasa mattress just about right but a AutoHome Overcamp to hard.

3. which one has most comfy mattress?

I find the Autohome Overcamp mattress OK but my better half found putting a lightweight Thermarest under the mattress makes for a comfy night.

Mattresses seem to be a particularly individual thing and I've read of plenty of folks who have replaced or augmented the factory mattress.
