RTT's in Canada?

Hey everyone, I've been on the hunt for a RTT for my JK for some time now. It seems there are a lot of decent options that are fairly priced (Camping lab, Mombasa etc) but once they're shipped up to Canuckville the price point explodes do to shipping and brokerage fees and what not.

The best overall price I've gotten was the ARB Simpson series 3 for $1700 shipped from Stan in Ponoka Alberta (not sure if the company is a sponsor on here so I won't say his business name).

Anyone have any idea or suggestions where else to look?

Thanks!

Here are some on Craiglist, of course in the US. Just ship to Coutts, US side, there is a guy there who will store it for you ($3/day) then come down and pick it up, or if you have a friend in Calgary to pick it up. Just a thot, should still be cheaper.

You can buy one next time you're in the states and have it drop shipped to a friend's place, mount it, use it, get it dirty, then drive it back with no hassles, no duty/taxes, no brokerage, just exchange rate.

Places to get a good deal (new):

You'd save even more by just stealing one off another vehicle if you are really that into breaking the law.

The fines for smuggling aren't really that big of a deterrent. First offense fines are something like 40% of the value of the item plus tax on the fine but if your vehicle has been "modified for smuggling" they simply seize the rig on the spot.

"No officer, that drawer system is for camping, not smuggling. I was only trying to smuggle the tent!":Wow1:

I had sold my '03 D2 to a fellow on the Island. While it was at Land Rover of Victoria waiting for it's new engine to arrive someone stole the Hannibal RTT and jerry can holders. It seems someone has balls and an hour to steal stuff because those pieces were on there pretty good. My point being that if anyone on Vancouver Island comes across a used Hannibal RTT or sees someone with one that really could not afford one, please take note of a license plate and notify the police.

Little bit late to post, but you can pick up a RTT from Duncan at Titan Winches in Burlington, Ontario (near Toronto).

http://www.titanwinches.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=38

I got mine from him and am very happy with it. It is made by the same manufacturer that made the ARB tents (before ARB changed manufacturers). Only difference is logo on the tent (and the lower price for not paying for that special logo).

He will also ship them. Price for shipping it to Ottawa via freight was pretty cheap.

Any other users of the titanwinches tent? I am thinking of going this way and was hoping for more reviews.

Well I know it is just me again, but my brother got one as well and he likes it a lot. He actually installed it on the top of a Chevy Tracker and goes camping with the family that way without any problems. "Best camping tent I ever got" was his response.

There are a few reviews of the tent on other forums the net, but I just checked and you have to join the forums to be able to view those sections.

Duncan is a good guy to deal with stands by what he sells. He actually flew all the way to the factory to see the tents being made to make sure it was all good before confirming his order.

Here it is on my truck earlier this summer. It is not fully setup, as I just wanted to take a few quick pictures.

Would have liked to get it in green (to match the truck), but this color is better in keeping the tent cool during the summer ;)

I will be ordering the annex and awning for the tent this year. Should have bought it when I first got the tent, but I wasn't sure I would want it.

I have been thinking of getting a RTT for the Rover but for the money you can buy a huge outfitter tent that has way more room and can sleep 8-10 ppl. the only draw back is the RTT is pretty quick to set up.

Duty charge on imported Roof Top Tent

I had my Camping Lab shipped from Florida. Wasn't all that bad.

If you don't mind me asking, do you recall what % duty you paid? I was looking at a RTT in the states and called Canadian Border Services agency and was told because there is cloth/canvas the duty would be 17%!!!! This was on a Columbus Variant. RTT There must be another way to classify the tent to reduce the duty
Thanks in advance

Years ago when I purchased my Eezi-Awn, I picked it up in Montana. I was in the USA for over 7 days and even though I was over the allotted amount (and declared the full value of the tent and other items) I was not charged any duty at all.

My suggestion is to ship it to www.montanashipping.com in Eureka, spend a week exploring the Pacific Northwest and then come home. You'll have a great trip and you'll likely pay nothing extra.
