Absolutely awesome trip guys, and world-class photography to match! This is an instance when "epic" truly does fit! Thanks also for linking maps and information for those of us who may want to recreate some of your experience.

Just found this after doing a search for Black Bear Pass, that looked absolutely nuts. What does a truck need to be able to do that safely? Looks like it was an amazing trip though, made me miss living in BC and the mountains, that's for sure!!

My 09 Tacoma had stock suspension and a fairly loaded Flippac when we did this trip. The switchbacks are the easier part. We had great spotters and as far as I can recall only the Tacomas needed to do 3-4 point turns at some of the switchbacks. The scary part was the rocky section above the switchbacks. My truck would slip/slide on unstable/wet rocks. Had a great co-pilot who helped reassure me all was well.

Just revisiting this thread as I have a trip planned for the area. All of the information that you have shared in this and other threads has been really helpful!

Why not come along on the next epic group trip?

I have my own Epic Trip planned  5 days with the expedition trailer camped at 10,000 feet with offroading on the old roads then over to Mess Verde for 3 days. I am still working on my blog post for the recent trip to Canyonlands. Slow going when picking through 1100 photos!
