Does anyone know where/if the Series III have diff breathers or seals? If so, where do I find them for inspection?

The breather is a brass fitting on top of the axle case. Take it off and clean it out to make sure it is functional. It acts like a check valve. If it is seized up, it will cause more leaks. Good luck with the rebuild!

As for the axle shaft, we may have hit a snag.

- The truck is on jacks and not running
- The short axle shaft on the right is on and same as the left one
- The bolts are tightened
- Both wheels move when spun by hand
- However, a gear is engaged and the wheels can be moved forcefully and doesn't feel 'locked'

I think you are crazy and I am still not sure what the issue is.

I don't see how you could screw up anything doing what you are doing.

Maybe post a video of the issue you think you have.

Are your hubs properly locked?

The rear hubs are tightened. Maybe we'll post a video after we filled the diff with oil and tested it out.

If the truck moves on an incline/decline on its own when parked and 2nd gear engaged, there may be a bigger issue.

When your spin one of the wheels the other is spinning as well and this is the problem your facing in assuming? But is the other wheel spinning in the opposite direction? That is perfectly normal, if you use the gear as a parking brake both wheels have to spin the same direction for the truck to roll. Try to spin the drivers wheel clock wise and have some one else spin the passengers click wise as well, bet they can't

I'm officially crazy but no matter.

Happy weekend for Team Garth!

The axle shafts are in, put new diff oil in, new gaskets, and he's rolling.

GARTH IS ALIVE AGAIN!

Previous owner was lazy though and put a random bolt instead of the original one so one has bigger threads. Planning to replace all flange bolts.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, new steering damper is in.

Took off the old mudguard brackets that the previous owner left to rot. You know how hard it is to get 30 years of rusted bolts off?! Dremel; crowbar; hammer; repeat.

New mudflaps are now on and tomorrow will continue with new side mirrors, and the weekend will be a brake fluid flush & more goodies to be installed!

Bolt probably stripped and was tapped out to a larger size. A common occurrence. You need the bigger bolt.

Some musings I learnt over the weekend:

Took Garth out from Calgary to Edmonton on Friday night and this was my first long drive on the Land Rover.

It can do 115kph but it's at the price of your eardrums. 90kph is adequate. I can also do Calgary to Red Deer (~146km) in half a tank (~22.5L), giving me a mileage of ~15MPG!

Using downhill momentum to get to the other side works wonders!

My heater works well, thankfully and on Saturday, I learnt through other LR oweners that I need to work on approach, techniques, and knowing the LR's limitations. It was a fun run with the Alberta Land Rover Enthusiasts (ALRE)!

Sunday was McLean Creek and rock crawl is fun! There was a rockshelf I wanted to try but there wasn't enough power in that 2.25L petrol engine to get me up.

The view more than made it up for it.

I'll post videos up once I've edited them because the engine vibrated so much

Also, I've added some more mods before the trip which included, better recovery points at the front and bigger side mirrors.
