Well, the original Lucas alternator came off and had it tested; doesn't work.

Currently being reconditioned and will have it back next week! ^.^

I love the Webber 2 barrel. Keep it. Same carb used on the 2.5l Defender. The Webber will run rich if the idle circuit is clogged and someone has used the idle speed screw (throttle plate adjustment) to make it idle OK. 2nd choice would be the Rochester.

Ron, do you remember what you run for a Main jet in the Rochester?

Whatever was it in when I got it 15 years ago. :)

Runs a little rich but goes better than other series. Of course, she only has 42k or so on it.

The socket and wiring will definitely need replacing as well since it's brittle.

He needs winter tires fast lol.

Ouch. Those are high wear numbers. Hopefully the different oil helps.

Cross fingers! :) So far, the 15W30 isn't having trouble cranking but we haven't hit the real lows yet. I also plug it in an hour or two before starting.

Block heater ******!

As a comparison, my 200TDI has been getting around 3 ppm of wear metals per 1000 km. You are showing around 20.

I'm not sure if you know, but you can get the oil analysis done locally. Finning is quick and easy and has a nice tracking system.

Well, now I know. Thanks!

Also, it wouldn't crank last night after I plugged in the block heater for hours so looks like I'll be buying a magnetic oilpan heater later today.

Or a new battery? I cold started my 2.5NA at -40 successfully, so the starter should have enough grunt to turn it over well enough.

I would do a glue on pan heater. Gregg Distributors has a nice selection that fit well.

It's a brand new battery so shouldn't have issues.

Update: Left the block heater plugged in this morning and it just started!

Have to buy a bigger magnetic pan heater because it didn't seem to help much and the bigger one is the same price.

On something that old you might want to locate, disassemble and clean every electrical ground (earth) connection you can find starting with the battery. Probably ought to clean the hot connection on the starter as well. Toothed lock washers can be a good thing for electrical connections - they provide good "bite" into the substrate at low torque.

Dirty connections = high resistance = bad news (especially in winter).

Nice vintage Rover - I'm envious.
