What happens before we start? My battery dies.

Boosted, I'm good to go again!

I could clear but not enough power in the 2.25L petrol to get Garth all the way up! After trying out various paths, he couldn't make it up. Kept stalling on the second step.

The descent. The right side is all cliff.

Thought I'd get wet:

Bad idea. That took me an hour to clean on the INSIDE and out.

Got new oil to try out on Garth: 15W40 Rotella T and new back seats from The Rover Shop Calgary.

New heavy duty battery from Interstate as the old one was too small. Through voltmeter testing, we found out that the alternator wasn't efficient enough when all of the electrics were on. Time to check out better options.

Videos coming this weekend. Still editing.

The conversion to a delco 10si alternator is well documented although I would prefer to stick with the stocker and just not use too much power from it.

Rotella T 15W40 is in! Will see how that runs.

Who needs a minivan when you have a 7-seater right here?! Got the essentials bolted up and/or tied down (fire extinguisher, tire wrench, First Aid kit, tool box).

Fun fact: My toolbox used to hold 50 cal bullets. :)

Your alternator is not charging at all it seems. Either it is dead or something else in the circuit. I have to admit I don't know about SIII electronics, only SII and SIIa, but on those the voltage regulator often fails by having the connection in the back crack/melt. Easily remedied by some wire and solder.

Use the volt meter and check continuity at all points in the circuit or just try a known good alternator and see if it charges.

Yeah, the alternator is intermittent. Sometimes it charges; sometimes it doesn't. Our layman's way of testing it other than the voltmeter, is to check if it magnetizes. If it does, that means it's working and it was finicky. It's internally regulated so either I get it rebuilt or use an AC Delco 10SI, if I can find one.

It is one of the most common alternators ever made. Canadian Tire should be able to get one and might have it in stock.

The bearer of good news! :D

Also, I did the oil change from Pennzoil to Rotella which was done at ~4k miles (if the speedo is correct)and it was jet black.

Time for Blackstone to do another analysis!

Sent from my Windows Phone using Tapatalk. No, it doesn't have BSOD.

Pretty normal to have black oil on an old engine. Give it a few changes and it should start to clean up. Check your PCV (if it is still fitted on your SIII) or better yet get rid of it entirely.

PCV? Also, any better carb options out there that people may know of for the Series? I'll try reconditioning what I have first by cleaning the manifold and carb but at current state, we tuned it to get ideal idling and runs fantastic but still smells rich. Not enough air to burn it seems.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation

I would ditch it and use a SII or SIIa system with just the breather, but at least make sure it is clean and in proper working order. You could have vacuum leaks or other issue like it being clogged. It is very simple, but needs to be cared for.

As far as carbs, I assume you have a zenith. Google zenith warping to see if that is an issue you have. Other options are weber 1 and 2 barrel and Rochester B or M. The stock solex on earlier trucks is fine too. I have a Rochester on mine. I have a solex to swap in when I get motivated.

Not enough air seems very unlikely unless you overfilled the oil bath or something.

I love the Webber 2 barrel. Keep it. Same carb used on the 2.5l Defender. The Webber will run rich if the idle circuit is clogged and someone has used the idle speed screw (throttle plate adjustment) to make it idle OK. 2nd choice would be the Rochester.

Ron, do you remember what you run for a Main jet in the Rochester?

Do you have a site to recommend on how to clean these Weber 2 barrel's? Also, is there a rebuild/repair kit to buy for any gaskets/parts?
