I can't say we're in the market just yet for a new (different) vehicle, but since I've been adding offspring, the Rubicon ain't much of a travelin' vehicle anymore since we have to take more supplies camping. I got to thinking...

Looking out on eBay tonight I saw a LOT of H2's for sale in the mid-20's with not too many miles on them. They're just old enough that it won't hurt my feelings to bash it off-road or park it outside at night, and still young enough to be reliable.

Clearly, putting gas in that big bushpig would suck, but not much worse than my lifted Rubicon gets now. I wouldn't even lift it. Just swap out the street tires that the previous mom...er, owner...put on it for some 37" Mud Grapplers, take off the stupid running boards, and wheel that big ********** till the tie rod tacos.

Yeah, I'm thinking.

Just upgrade or carry a tierod. Fuelmileage on H2 varies, my buddy got 16, my other friend gets 14. The unit we testdrove was around 11 (pulled a horsetrailer way too fast for testing, was actually pretty good). If you have a dealership closeby with a testtrack, go try that out and compare it to the 3 on that track. Having driven all 3 models on said track and offhighway: The 2 is very comfortable, very, so much that its hard to say if that tire really is on that rock. The 3 has more offroadfeedback.

True, the H3 is a more desirable vehicle for me, especially given what we're in now (the Jeep). However, the H3 isn't terribly roomy inside for its size and we wouldn't gain much over the Wrangler.

...except a 5,000-lb towing capacity, which I miss having.

They are even a decent price here in Canada actually. A friend of mine picked up a new H3 for a huge discount off MSRP (I think it was near 10k less).

I understand that on the the east coast they are simply not moving off the lot and many are being shipped out here to sell off cheap. (but I haven't seen much verification from GM on that)

I tend to think that the price of the "full size" SUV's is not going to come back anytime soon unless gas takes a significant drop in price and even then folks may be a little gun shy.

There's a lot of full size trucks out there for sale that are not moving. I think that we'll see folks using them only when necessary and not as daily drivers any longer. Vehicles that don't fit that niche of having a specific use will likely continue to drop in price until the ownership costs are comparable to a smaller vehicle.

here in central montana where we'll still over 4 bucks a gallon...all the local big three dealers are selling all their big trucks and SUV's at 50% or more off the last radio add i herad a few minuts ago was an 08 dodge 2500 4 door for 15,900

In some ways Im VERY tempted to find something brand new.....

I subscribe to Australian 4WD Action magazine - there's quite a bit of H3 talk down under now that the South African H3s are being sold in reasonable numbers. Biggest complaints are too small inside, fuel tank is too small and 5 cylinder engine is underpowered. Other than that it is quite popular off road.

The H2 is very big. Bigger than my H1 except for width. If you are seriously thinking about an H2 go over to one of the Hummer forums and see what the H2 guys are doing. People like to make fun of the fact that H2s are built around a Suburban chassis but Subs are pretty good offroaders.

H1s are also considerably cheaper now than they were a few years ago!

i never understood the h3 complaints.

peole buy jeeps and put spacers on with bigger flares.... the same wide track to body ratio as an h3, but then the h3 gets bashed for being small inside for it "size"...

and 200 odd hp is fine for wheeling. till recently LC's were poky, and my d110 has 180 hp if paul simon is 6ft tall.

hi zimm:

I think the H3 "complaints" from Oz are more from the perspective of an expedition base. Long way between gas stations down there I guess.

From what I've read, the H3 is a very competent off-roader.
