A friend of mine was stuck in a mud hole in the middle of the bush with just himself a rope and a chansaw. He tied a rope 20ft up the tree with a few feet of slack then put his jeep in neutral and cut the tree down away from the jeep. I personaly would prefer using my winch but anything that works works for me!!

Many military manuals from the 40-50's show this concept for getting unstuck. Many military vehicles of that era had holes in heavy metal end caps on the axles for that reason.

Theres also the reel method where you wrap a strap around a drive wheel and tie the other end to a tree, rock, large immovable object. Some of the VW iltis even had a little hub on the wheels for just that purpose. Anyways with a little luck you giver a little gas and the strap locks tight around the wheel turning the wheel into a reel of sorts pulling you out of the hole.
