Series Landy Question?

Hi guys,

I have been looking at some Series land rover's to buy for myself. :smiley_drive:

I had a look at one on Friday and i noticed something attached to the engine.

It looks standard and i checked other pictures of engine bays and it is shown there as well.

I assumed it is an oil filler tube, but then on the tappet cover is the oil cap.

What is it? :confused:

It's the oil filler tube and the top just pulls off.
The one on the rocker cover is just a breather and is retained by a screw in the side.

That'a actually an engine condition monitor. When the rings start to go bad the crankcase pressure will blow oil out the fill pipe breather all over the under hood components, letting you know it's time for a ring job.:elkgrin:

LOL..just one of the high tech warning systems of a series !

IT's the oil filler pipe for a 3 main bearing 2.25. You can tell the later model 5 main bearing unit as the filler is on top of the valve cover. IMO the 5mb is the better 2.25

Well, lets see...

Other than the oil filler/ crank case breather cap circled in red (EMISSIONS controlled engines had a sealing cap that came off for adding oil), I spy a MKIII Kodiak heater (very desirable), a 7:1 compression head (standard on preSMOG engines) and what appears to be a new Rochester carb. A coil with resister is a little odd though.

I'd guess a 1967?

I "stole" a picture as a reference and don't actually have a pic of the land rover in question.

Although the owner did tell me that it was 1965 model SWB when it was actually a LWB.
The bulkhead/firewall needs replacement as well as all chassis outriggers and rear crossmember (bumper?).

It has galvanised rims with good tyres on, (not retreads).

He wants ZAR13000 for it. (1,889.81 USD)

It is in running condition as he reversed out of his garage to show it to me.
It was used as a towvehicle for fishing boats, so am a bit wary on the rust issue.

I take it the vehicle is in South Africa. Sounds like a project and a black hole. Take it from a guy who has had 5 of these. Does it have road worthy? Is it currently registered? If not, walk away. There are plenty of other landies.

Yes, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Not sure if it has a roadworthy certificate.
It is currently licensed and regisitered.

I know there are plenty of others.

Like I said, without a roadworthy certificate, don't buy it. You can't register it in your name or drive it till it passes, which may take a lot of time and money. If it takes a while, penalties can mount, because you have xx days to register it after you purchase the vehicle.
