Found a 4th gen Toyota 4Runner corpse in a blowout in the dunes recently...

Not that it matters, but that looks more like the burned out hulk of a newer Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ). Hopefully somebody can remove it.

I'm thinking some home made skids of 2x12 will be easier to pull out than a trailer. Still, it may require the use of two trucks to pull over considerably soft sand... unless the trailer is pulled along the hard pack closer to the water. Figure going in just before low tide. You're a coastal brew, Mike, what do you think. :sombrero:

Jack it up, strap it low, and let it ride...

First, you have to get it out of its hole. Next you have to make it resemble a sled as closely as possible. Third and most importantly, don't stop, cuz' if it bogs down, you will have to rinse and repeat. Attach as short of a tow strap as possible as low as possible on the vehicle, so as to excentuate the sled effect.

For something so far away from hard sand, it will not be an easy recovery. I expect it will take over an hour just to get it to the beach, and another to get it on the trailer. The high lift will earn its keep, as will the winch and a couple of tow straps. Depending on what we find out there as runners, it may end up looking like a sleigh. :coffeedrink:

EDIT: There are too many factors at work here for me to know exactly how it will play out. It may be an option to bring the trailer to the wreck. It also may be buried by the time we get there and we will not find it. All is possible out in the dunes, and seemingly easy stuff can turn out to be a real PITA.

Ok. Close enough. I'm on a mission now. There was talk about getting a cleanup trip together. Maybe I should get movin' on that. There will be a post up for a trip early next year, I think. I'll be down there for a few days, haulin' trash. Hopefully we will have a decent showing. There really is stuff down there that we can clean up that nobody else really can... should be fun... hope to see some of y'all there!

Sorry to sidetrack so much... lets get back to pics of neat rigs!

Can you say, insurance fraud?

In a similar vehicle recovery in the mountains, we chopped the car into several pieces with a torch. A panel van loaded with chunks and a truck bed trailer hauled out the chunks of the old carcass.. Smaller pieces are more managable.

Nope, not on PINS. South of Bob Hall Pier, Kleberg county beach area.

It's a 4th gen 4Runner no doubt...I searched for VIN# but they were destroyed; someone is missing their 4Runner!!

I don't know about States, but in Europe such cases usually means that the truck was stolen for "business" and as soon as the "business" was done they just eliminated the evidence. It's vary sad from the owner point of view as sometimes you have not an ordinary vehicle which is easily replacable (read most of us) where he or she put allot of time and money to make it the way it is.

As it pertains to PINS, driving in the dunes is on the "do not do list". Please follow the laws to help protect against closure for everyone else.

PART 4 – VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC SAFETY
Section 4.12 – Traffic Control Devices
Parking is prohibited in the following areas:
(i) Shoulders of Park Road 22, Bird Island Basin Road, Bird Island Basin boat ramp road,
Bird Island Basin Campground and Windsurfing roads.
(ii) Driving in the dunes or fore dunes is prohibited.
(iii) Vehicles with boat trailers are not allowed to park at the Bird Island Basin Windsurfing
or campground areas unless they are camping there. (BIB campground / Windsurfing
area is not an over flow parking area for the boat ramp)
(iv) Day use parking in the BIB campground is prohibited from November 1 thru May 1.
(Designated camping sites can be utilized as day use parking only if it is posted by a
Law Enforcement Ranger or a campground host. This will allow for overflow parking
from the windsurfing day use area. This will only be allowed for temporary day use
parking.)

As it pertains to PINS...

That area of beach is under the jurisdiction of the Kleberg County Sheriffs Department. It's a weird situation since when Kleberg Cnty. patrols the beach, they need to travel approx. 100 miles round trip from Kingsville, TX. Needless to say, patrols are extremely few and far between, mostly occurring on major holidays when the beach is packed.

HOWEVER, I have gotten the 'nod of approval' from a deputy that it's OK to be in the blowout as long as no trash is dumped, no fires are started, and I stay OFF the neighboring grasslands & dunes. But to add to the complexity of this, Kleberg County has delegated that Corpus Christi oversee its dune management programs. So who has the authority?? I've got no freaking idea.

I'd never EVER think of bombing across the established, vegetation stabilized dune system; heck it's the dunes that protect the city during a hurricane!!

Lets get this sucker back on track...SHOW US 4RUNNER OR TACO LOVE!!! :sombrero:

(ii) Driving in the dunes or fore dunes is prohibited.

I'm sure the authorities will allow the removal of the burned out vehicle even if it is a normally enforced area. They seemed pretty accomodating to people trying to help the last time I was down there!

... and I would wager its not something as complicated as drug smuggling... the stuff comes in off the boats down there. I have seen similar cases in Galveston where someone gets upside down on their car loan, then has it "stolen" so they can get out of the note.

I've already posted this one, but I think it applies, given recent discussion. :)

Just finished installing my lift.

Donahoe C/O's up front, 63'' Chevy swap in the rear, 255/85R16 Maxxis Bighorns, 10'' Bilstein 5125's, diff breather, and tranny cooler and ARB bumper + KEW 8000 lbs winch. Ooga Horn to come.. :coffeedrink:

Write-up to come in my build thread.

The C/O need adjusting, still settling. Settled quite a bit in the last 4 days.

As you can see the rear is sitting a little high. The front coilovers need to be adjusted to compensate for the sag and settling of the coils from the weight of the ARB and winch. I'll let them settle a bit more then adjust them after christmas, before I get the alignment done.
The Chevy leaf swap turned out great!!!
I cycled the rear to see how much travel I would get.
Ii couldn't max out the flex because the leaf centering bolt needs to be cut down, it 2.5 -3" long, it would puncture the bump stops. The U-bolts also need to be cut down, they are 4" long.... no biggie.
The rear tire rubs the rear fender tupperware at this test compression. I'm cutting the rear fender in the spring. The cut will be just below the fender horizontal concave fender detail just below the TRD sticker. The rear bumper will have quarter panel sliders, so the rubbing issue will disappear. With everything cut and trimmed I should be able to squeeze a few more inches of compression out of the rear. The other bonus with the Chevy swap is, I can do a SAS in the front without worrying about major modifications to the rear. All I would need is longer shackles and shocks.

All in all the result is amazing! It feels like a totally new rig. The ride is controlled, body roll is gone when cornering (sway bar is still attached... for now (I would like to fab a quick disconnect for the trails)

Was the hard work and minimal sleep and built time worth it?

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!

Would I do it again?

In a HEART BEAT!!!!!
