Sierra Challange 2015 Aug 31st - Sept 9th

They finally started on it today, will have the head off tomorrow and see if its a problem with the head, gasket, or??? They spent a lot of time trying to prove it was something else, but came down to something wrong with the head as its the only thing that changed. If head has issues I still have a back up. Pushing them along, I still need 2 skids, and hopefully a CB install. Man, just a month to get this sorted out. Never changes....Our New 4Runner is as slow as the 1996 Montero, but at least it will run forever.

I'm sure they'll get it sorted out my guess is someone got a bit in a hurry to put it back together and slacked on cleaning or maybe even a bad torque on the head. I suggest after they get it put together drive the heck out of it and have them do a retorque on the head bolts before you head out to the sierra's.

Hopefully we learn something tomorrow. Thing runs great with the new valve seals otherwise. Tranny is slow to shift when cold, but other then that its very solid. BTW has any work on Idler arms happened?

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
The head and block surfaces need to be perfect on these motors, the dealer didn't do a good job on my wife's Montero and it only lasted 40k miles before it needed a new head gasket. When PA_JERO pulled the heads there were pieces of the original gaskets under the new ones, unfortunately we were out of warranty. :)

That is what is scary, 45HP more with stock tires and its slow as the Montero with 37's pretty much. Just no torque.

I believe they fired the guy that did my engine, so if that gives you any idea....

Have you driven the V8 Landcruisers at all? 270hp 320ftlbs of torque, I may go drive one (specifically the 120 series) to see how I like it as a back up for if the new Sport is not up to the Montero task. I figure if anything out there is going to be close to Montero quality and durability i'll probably have to downgrade to a Landcruiser and since I can't afford a 200 series a 120 will have to do.

I actually inquired about importing a late model Sport from Mexico through a legit importer, they haven't gotten back to me yet. They basically said "take the price of the car you want and tack on 10k" Which for me is fine because even late model low milage Montero's are worth 1/4 of their new price. I found an '11 Sport with offroad package with 36k miles for $12,500 so $22,500 is still less than any same year milage other 4x4. We'll see what they come up with, maybe they told me 10k to import to scare me away? Someone's gonna sell me a new truck...

The 4runner is 270Hp and 278 torque and its plain awful. Its also throttle mapping and such I am sure. Importing is big $$$$ Taxes, safety, smog.....

Been out of the loop for awhile with work, kid, and life. At this point i'm a "maybe, but not likely" for the trip this year. We landed a contract that is huge for the business and being the boss I've gotta stay to make sure we get off to a good start. Damned grown up responsibilites keep getting in my way of fun!

I'm planning to meet the group at the trail head to camp and hang for a night. Who knows? Maybe i'll be able to do the trip after all if I can sneak away for that many days - but i can't say for sure until the very last minute.

The rig is being upgraded now just in case. Replaced the blown rear end, rebuilding the cvs, lifting the fuel tank, and adding another inch of lift.

Anyway, just wanted to keep you in the loop.

If your gonna go as far as meeting with the group at Wentworth. Just spend the extra couple days and do the Rubicon if nothing else.

Decided the head they used was milled too far down and causing too much combustion. Going to grab that other engine tomorrow, and use one of our heads off of it assuming nothing is wrong...
