Sierra Challange 2015 Aug 31st - Sept 9th

Was debating a new CB and new antenna set up Vs GMRS mobile radio Vs the trouble of going Ham. Just seems like CBs are always trouble, but much easier to get range for a reasonable cost, and still the most common. Just have to go with a roof top antenna system which I hate due to all the tree troubles......Ham would be awesome, but tuning is also complex and fewer rigs have it...

I'm running a basic 2m radio. Very similar to CB for install and setup. It just has 65w of power vs 4w CB. Very simple to use in simplex. Set the channel and done. Advantages : Distance, clarity and way less interference issues. Radio is more expensive. I paid $165 for mine. Handheld radios work very well too. I talked to my buddy over 19 miles away with a 8w handheld radio (no external antenna - simplex). I studied the exam questions the morning of the test and passed. I think it cost $15 for 10yr license.

Ok since I'm prolly going to be the last guy in this group, I'm definitely looking for a radio reliable enough to call for a helicopter evac, when things get too tough.

I think I'll invest in a 2m handheld radio . It looks like a good deal. This will be a new endeavor for me. Since I usually travel solo, my experience is a pair of Amazon walkie talkies and a Spot satellite messenger for emergencies but that won't help for group communication.

You recommend any particular handheld 2m radio montypower?

I have the 8w BaoFeng BF-F8HP. It worked awesome till the radio fried. Think the base charger cooked it. My friend still has his and it works fine. I may buy another one. They are inexpensive and tons of options.

We have always gotten by with frs units. Just use the secondary code channel and no interference. I will have 2 I am gonna bring. One for someone that's not equipped with one. But I will also have my CB. And no, we don't leave anyone behind. I can bring up the back of the line to make sure no one falls to far back. Besides, as the trucks in front move ahead they should ALWAYS be watching for the truck behind to make sure we don't lose anyone. If we hit a spot that rigs will have issues with, we all pitch a hand and make sure everyone gets through safely. We always shoot for a trip to be fun and enjoyable for everyone. If it means taking our time to get people through, then that's what we do.

Hope everyone's mods are coming along. Once again I hit a snag. When replacing valve guide seals a cam bolt broke in the head, and the head ended up having to coming off, and that always means big trouble when a head has to come off. And once back together it ran beautifully, no more smoke.....but overheats at slow speeds, fine on highway. Tried everything, clearly as usual something went wrong. Maybe gasket blocking a coolant port? Anyhow, its a good shop so they are pulling it apart under warranty today. My other biggy is it will never pass smog, the idiotic computer never shows finished running tests no matter how long I drive it. State said tough luck, and suggested I take it to a dealer to have checked out and maybe get some sort of waiver from them.....fun fun. If not I may just have to leave it un-registered and pay tickets until we move out of the idiotic smog county in about a year. State claims its only a problem with Montero Sports of that Era, not Monteros. And still I have skid plates, CB and other to do.....Hard to get stuff done when you are always in the shop for major engine stuff!

My points are dont wait until the 11th hour for things, and dial those cooling systems in 120%. Not being the problem really, but I even swapped the fan clutch, heat taped a fan shroud gap, and ordered the missing bottom valiance on the shroud to make sure once sorted out I have max cooling for the Sierras.

In California there is a state document that states all Mitsubishi models from 1996-1998 should be tested without regard to readiness status. Maybe NM has something similar...Not sure what year your Montero is.

Here is a link to the CA document http://www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/Appendix_J_5.22.14.pdf

They do, but they claim it only apply's to Montero Sports and they have records that 1996 Monteros are passing..Ridiculous. Will try the stealer once its out of the shop again, but I don't expect any love there.

Can you get your hands on a copy of the state documents showing only Sports? The CA documents clearly states all Mitsubishi models 96-98 should be tested disregarding the readiness status.

Good luck!
