SilicaRich's Overland TJ Rubicon Build

So I've found myself in a bit of a situation with an opportunity of getting a set of tires and rims free. My roommate is a former 2011 JK owner who has his old takeoffs back at home in his garage. His mom wants them gone and he doesn't feel like putting them up for sale and is giving me first dibs (they would bring them up next weekend, the younger brother is taking a tour of the campus so it's not out of their way). I have no desire in the rims but I am somewhat interested in the tires. They are the Goodyear SRA's with around 60% tread and they might be a decent substitute for my current KM takeoffs. Truthfully, I've hated the KMs ever since I started to run them. They are noisy, handle awful period, and hurt my already abysmal fuel economy, only thing I like about them is their offroad performance. That being said, the SRA's would likely be everything I would prefer besides the lack of offroad performance and much weaker sidewalls. However, I don't plan to much to do much offroad (besides moderate forest trails or such) between now and next summer, when I plan to try to buy a new longterm set of tires.

What do yall think? Worth a free set of tamer tires (with the expense to have them mounted) and sell the KMs + other rims or just stick with what I have. If anyone has any experience with the Goodyear SRA's please chime in your experiences and opinions of them.

Guessing the other wheels are JK moabs?

I would be all over that. Ideally, you could mount the mud terrains on one set of wheels and throw them on the Jeep when you want to go wheeling, or worse case you just sell whatever you end up not using and have some extra cash. Might be a little difficult if your college accomodations are anywhere near as small as mine though.

They aren't Rubicon takeoffs, they are the more traditional style like the old TJ Moabs. I don't honestly know which are which anymore.

Ahh dorm life was rough back in the day. I live in a house now so I could theoretically have two separate sets of tires but it's completely unnecessary since I don't do much offroading and such while in Arkansas, just explore. I feel like picking up the extra cash would be nice, also give a share to my roommate for being a cool guy and giving me the set for free.

Yeah sound like JK Moab's. I have a set that will most likely go on mine when I get slightly larger tires.

If those wheels and tires came off a Sahara they might not fit your rims. The Sahara used a 18" wheel. Might want to check that

Thanks reminding me to check! Just got confirmation and pics from him that they are indeed the 17"x7.5" 5 spokes so the tires should fit, his JKU was a Sport.

Shoot, if you didn't already have a set I would have these shipped to you. You would just have to pay for the shipping costs.

That would of been awful nice of ya man! Yeah the JK Moab's are plentiful around here. The set I have I actually got for free lol

New Tires Are Here

20161009_140447-768x1024.jpg

The new set of tires have arrived! Tires have around 40k or so miles so they are definitely worn but they are temporary so I am not worried. Spare is untouched, one tire has some pretty decent wear and has lost most of it's sipping (plan to use as spare). I probably won't have these mounted till Friday or the weekend due to 3 tests this week, but once these are mounted the old KMs and these rims will be up for sale.

You know that sweet moment when you fix a rattle or squeak? Just nailed a few of them today. Finally silenced a squeak from my rear tire carrier, relocated my license plate to fix a rattle, and reinstalled my aftermarket radio to fix another rattle. Let's see how long she lasts!

I feel ya man, when they put my tranny back in after the new clutch something happened with the shift knob and it rattles around, but only in odd gears. .....which means 5th......all the way to Raleigh. 4 hours of that. Ugh. At least the reat of the Jeep is so loud i cant hear any other rattles :D

Hopefully yours stay gone!

Neither of my old Jeeps rattle much, but out on a trail ride outside of Moab, I had to tell the guy behind me that his CJ5 sounded like a freight train derailing through a junk yard. That evening he borrowed a few tools from me and tightened a few things up.
Much better the next day.

That's how mine has been. Nearly every rattle that forms is due to some sort of modification that's been done in the past and I'm normally able to pinpoint it. Radio rattle was due to me not tie wrapping the connection off after installation out of pure laziness, license plate rattle (relocated originally after installing the ARB rear bumper) was from it's deformities from catching bushes and limbs causing it to rattle against the tub, and the rear squeak was from actually the rubber on the clamp to the tub for my rack that is attached to the bumper (likely from Big Bend dust). Now the only noise that needs to be solved is my squeaky brakes that need new rotars desperately.

You wouldn't believe the amount of relief I had pulling out of my back gate this morning. It's littered with ruts and holes (My Jeep is the culprit) and while going over those there wasn't a single rattle or squeak besides the ching of my absurdly cluttered key ring.
