With the recent start of our Southern Arizona regional expo group in the community forum we decided to have a meet and greet weekend. Pau-hana(Alan) and I had decided on a spot north of Tucson where the 24hours in the Old Pueblo Mtn. bike race is held. This would be an easy to find base camp for all attending.
For Saturday I had put together an overland route that would take us from Marana 50 miles to the campsite with only 1 mile of pavement mid way. There were only three of us that planned to take the overland route, the rest were to meet us at the campsite later in the evening.
We began along the west side of the Tortolita Mtns. heading north past Owl Head Butte.
At this point the road was barely traveled anymore. The last set of tracks on it were mine from a week and a half prior when I was scouting the run.
We stopped and this old corral for a short break.
We eventually linked up to this gasline road heading northeast and crossing HWY 79.
Then met up with another gas line that would take us southeast to the campsite.
Alan had pulled into the campsite within seconds of us arriving from the overland route. Now that's some timing.
At dusk a couple more members showed up to hang out for the evening.
We had a great time hanging out around the fire and getting to know our new friends. Sometime after dark the breeze would roll in and would stick around all night. I had planned to sleep outside next to the fire but the wind made me rethink my plans so I crammed myself into the back of the Xterra. The wind wasn't too strong but it stuck around until mid morning on Sunday.
