Solar Panel Covers????

Hey Guys

I have the Renogy 100w solar suitcase, and it works perfect for my needs. However, it is a bit of a pain in the butt to keep installing and removing.

I have been contemplating just replacing it with a permanently mounted panel on my roof rack instead.

While researching this, I have not found ANYTHING to cover the panels when not in use to protect from weather, etc...

I only drive my truck on trips, and it often sits for weeks at a time.

I was looking for a functional cover that could be driven with too, as my isolator charges the aux battery while I am driving.

Am I missing something here, or do they simply not need to be protected from the elements at all?

Thanks

One of those suitcase things maybe not longterm weatherproof, But ordinary solar modules are intended to be exposed to weather throughout their lifespan. 20 plus years...

I could only envision need to cover them if needing to "shut down" for some kind of servicing or disguise them from a stone throwing SOB.

Btw, Conductors leading from the solarmodules need enclosed or rated for exposure to weathering.
Most factory assembled conductors with the typical Solar MC4 connector is rated.

Great info! Thank you!

Ive never had mine covered.

Years later, completely exposed to North Idaho weather and they are fine.

Same goes for the MC4 connectors and wire.

That said, be sure to use legit photovoltaic.

Wire such as welding cable doesnt have the UV resistance.

Only reason Id ever consider covers are if Im servicing them for some reason.

As mentioned, the covers would be to "turn them off"

The main bonus to covering panels. They are always generating power. In vehicles / boats sitting unused with solar panels cranking out power you can see some issues. Vs simply just covering them and killing the power generation.

The most durable cover material is old school pvc coated stuff like boat seat material, it costs less than sun brella and lasts longer. Most sail makers and apolstry shops can easily make a cover for you. Just be sure they use UV stable thread.

If power needs to be disconnected from the charge controller, A simple disconnect means can be employed.

Exactly. In fact I would suggest that in most solar installations, a disconnect is part of planning a well thought out system. A disconnect is cheap and easy to install. As an example, it can provide a safe working environment while performing any required maintenance activities while working downstream of the disconnect while your panels are still receiving light energy.
