I spent 2 weeks camping at a spot a few miles west of the first one. More of a barren slightly sloping plain, with occasional washes where all the plants and wildlife are. Rainfall here is ~3" per year on average, so it's a serious desert! It was quiet and peaceful anyway, with a great view of the sky. It gave me a good chance to explore this area where I've never camped before. One good feature, bike riding was much better! No slogging for miles in a sand wash, or "roads" trashed by ATVs. Note... if you plan to camp here in winter, a good wind shelter from the north is a great feature! It's usually not windy, but when it is... you'll lose a nights sleep in the open. A big ironwood or paloverde tree will help a lot.
I did enough exploring and encountered so little traffic (zero campers, one group of "Jeeps") that I decided to camp by one of the mega-washes next. This is like a lush forest intersected with streams of sand. It's full of birds... quail, hummingbirds, mockingbirds, hawks, owls, and a bunch of others I don't know what to call. There is a robin sized bird with an orange chest that keeps fluttering around at my door. It landed on the table once, very briefly.
It's also very fragrant with flowers. There is a very fast growing vine that is covering many of the trees, that is probably the main source of that.
When I was in Yuma to get supplies, I stopped downtown for a burger and a couple beers, and there was a big F550 rig parked behind. Anybody we know?
