SPOT Messemger price increases

Excelsior!
The folks at SPOT hit on some nefarious ideas for price increases. First is a $9.99 fee for "network improvements" that seems to be inspired by the mumbo-jumbo on a typical cell phone bill. The bigger increase is $49.99 for the tracking mode which will no longer be optional.

"We are continuously making network upgrades to ensure the best possible service for our customers. To help fund these efforts now and in the future, an annual Network Improvement Fee of $9.99 will be charged upon renewal to customers after the first full year of service is completed.

We will also be adding Basic Tracking, with an annual $49.99 service charge, to your subscription. We know many subscribers didn't select Basic Tracking at activation because they were unaware of its functionality and thus its benefits. This is a major value added service that is benefiting a large portion of the current subscriber base and allows detailed, pinpoint and near-constant location information. Use Basic Tracking to leave a bread crumb trail of a traveled route when adventuring to add another level of safety in the case of an emergency."

This would inflate my bill from $118/year to $178/year, a whopping 51% increase. I can buy a new ACR RESQLINK for $230

Makes my 406MHz PLB look cheaper every day. $0/month and a purchase price amortized over 4-5 years makes it a STEAL.

Gotta pay for those new satellites somehow.

Seriously these guys need a clue. I used them for years (globalsat) for voice and they screwed Everyone when their satellite went tango.
