Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

You are wrong. Its 100% functional. Noone has asked me how i did it."

Grant, you are not telling the truth, are you. On April 1, 2016, you and I had the following exchange on your blog.

Am I seeing a snorkel on there now, too? How about some details on that?

It's coming. Have to finish it all up 100%

And then you never posted any followups. Man up, for heaven's sake, and lose the egotistical jerk attitude. The first snorkel-on-a-Subaru I recall seeing was on the Superu, which predates your discovery of the Subaru platform by several years. Now, if you attend a MtnRoo rally, you will see many of them. I was talking with a guy down in Washington State this summer and he told me stories of Back-In-The-Day in the 70s and 80s when the old Subaru wagons were modified and used for bogging and wheeling. You are just one guy in a very long history of women and men modifying this increasingly popular platform.

People like to look at how others solve problems similar to ones they face for many reasons. Some of your solutions are interesting, but frankly, I am not enamored with many of your solutions, for instance, the ugliest and least useful roof rack in the history of really ugly roof racks.

"If less people would stop worrying how someone else does something, and just try it, you'd see how easy this stuff really is."

Really? I've been building and modifying cars, trucks, vans, and jeeps for both off-road and overland travel since 1971. Catch up, then we'll chat.

In sum, don't think you are the pinnacle of all things Subaru. Or even in the top 25%. You have a nice rig, pretty well set up, but there is nothing in or on it that sets new standards or breaks new ground. It's all been done before.

thanks!
And it's not nice to look at other people's racks.

Really. What it comes down to, is there are like 60 things I haven't done a writeup on that I said I would. I have like 20 started and not finished drafts, haven't even made a blog post in like a month.
I have a busy life. Car comes second, and often Disney comes first. No one has emailed me, or messaged me really interested about it, or I would have done something.

Nothing is ground breaking on these cars. But I do pave my own way. Make my own springs because noone else does. Make (well, contract out) winch mounts because noone else does.

Am I a revolutionary? Nah. I'm just a dude that likes to play with automobiles. I won't ever deny that I'm a handful arrogant, or a ********, or whatever. It is what it is.

But I will still be humble enough even though fozroamer doesn't like me, and I don't really care for him either way because of that. His truck is sweet. Same with a number of rigs. He may not do any "hardcore" wheeling (and lets face it, I don't either) But at least he is one of the guys actually getting out there and camping and ****. More than I do nowadays.

Cheers to yall!:friday:
You hit the nail on the head sir. Im just thankful everyone is seeing through all his BS now.... That ego!

I thought everyone knew I had an ego? I'll try harder!
The reason is: I WANTED TO DO IT RIGHT THE RIGHT WAY

1. Its fully waterproof
2. People can reproduce it
3. Provide a useful parts list

One way isn't always a right or wrong way. Remember that ;)

Bam. Don't think I've posted my car here before.

2014 Subaru Crosstrek CVT
1" Mann Engineering Lift Springs
Pretty much everything else is either minuscule, or custom made, such as the roof rack.

Tell us more, in particular your roof rack. I made one for my old OB. Like to see what the other Subie guys are coming up with.

Not a whole lot to say. My brother and I made it because I was tired of my tiny Reese Basket, and had no easy, safe way of transporting longer or flatter objects, and the only mounting points were about 2ft apart. I also wanted to lower the flatbed to hopefully reduce wind noise and wind resistance, as well as streamline the look and lower CG.

So basically, we used two 1" square tubes as the "crossbars" to account for the curvature of the roof line. Then we welded up an outer box of 43" (to mount my 42" lightbar) x I think 56"? Might be 58". I'd have to measure. And then filled in the grates with 1/2" square tubing. Then coated that bad girl in truck bed coating. It is mounted by u-bolts that I have been too lazy to finalize for months now. But I'll be getting that done soon so it looks prime time for the MtnRoo SD event in Anza Borrego next month.

We welded the brackets on to mount the 42" OPT7 bar. The Hi-Lift is mounted using mounts I found at 4 Wheel Parts that, IIRC, were made to go around round tubing such as roll bars, but came with nice V-bolts that allowed me to mount it on an angle to my square tubing. Then the shovel (and soon to be Axe) is mounted using zip ties. I'm hoping to weld some brackets to hold a couple rear facing flood lights, and then mount a CB antenna that I can fold down and mostly out of the way when not in use.

It holds a hell of a lot more stuff than the old Reese, looks way better in my opinion, allows for a more versatile carry option, and was fun as hell to build. Oh, and my gas mileage went up about 1.2 mpg over the Reese Basket.

Any details on the lights mounted near the hood? It looks like you have brackets that mount on the bottom side?

If you need to jack up the Roo what do use for jacking points with the hi lift?

Was wondering this myself.

The rack looks awesome, though. I love the slim integration of the light bar.

For now, it's used primarily with a tire adapter.

However, I'm a bad boy and have occasionally used it in the normal lift points (very unsafe, don't do that.) Beyond that, it's my mechanical winch to get me unstuck.

I will be making sliders with lift points, but that's one of about two dozen different projects I'm working on with this car.

Yup, just bent metal to fit, basically. It bolts onto the hood mounts, goes back about 2", angles about 30*, goes another 2" or so, angles straight up and goes maybe an inch?, and the bends 90* straight forward. I'll try to get some better pics.

Rallye, thank you for the reply. I thought that was how your lights are mounted. Thank you for clarifying it.

Nice! Yeah, with those tire adapters, it's probably the safest possible use of a Hi-Lift. Looking forward to seeing those sliders once they're built as well, I'm looking into options for mine as well.
