Summitbeerowl's 93 Toyota Truck Build

I would skip the longer shackle and go with a set of Old Man Emu springs for the rear, especially if you are still running the Northwest Off-road rear springs. I ran a full set of their springs back in the day on an '81 pickup and I can honestly say that they were the harshest riding springs I have ever ridden on! They were so stiff that they barely flexed on the trail! Had them on the truck for 3-4 years and they never got softer.
I now have the Old Man Emu's on the rear of my '89 extra cab pickup and can't say enough good things about them. They started out at around 2"-2 1/2" of lift and settled to about 1 1/2" of lift. I've had them on for about 4 years now and consider them to be one of the best bang for the $ mods I've made to my truck. They ride nice and flex well.
I started the rear suspension of my truck with worn stock springs and longer shackels to gain some height and it rode kind of harsh. The OME springs fixed that problem. Worth the extra couple hundred dollars.
Don't know how to post a shortcut to my build page but if you go to my page I did a little write up a few years ago on what a budget suspension for our trucks can do.
Glad you decided to fix up your truck instead of getting rid of it!

Thanks for the input. I'm glad to hear from someone that had the Northwest springs on. They are very harsh. But throw 800 lbs in the back it rides like a dream. lol. It also comes in handy when Ive had a ton of crushed asphalt to haul. But for everyday driving man does it suck. I wish they had a spring that was a good 3" taller as mine increased 1.5 over stock and really should be higher. Not sure if it would be the right thing to go OME and then add a longer shackle as mentioned before or add a 1" block or go with something like skyjackers softride 4" leaf springs.

If you carry a load quite often get the Old Man Emu heavy rated. It basically adds one more leaf to the spring pack and ups the load rating like 300 lbs. I run the heavy version on my truck. Then if you still need the extra 1" of lift go with a longer shackle. Longer shackles do work well with properly arched springs.

That sounds like a good place to start. Thanks for the input. I spent some time last night reading through your builds. You've certainly done a lot to that truck and had some good adventures. It was some good reading. Lots to learn from you.

^ I absolutely love it as-is. Looking forward to seeing the post-paint results though.

Thanks! I'm excited to not see any rust on it. And hopefully the fender flares will update the look a little. It will still be an old truck but hopefully will continue on for a long time.
I'm surprised to not see a rack on the top of your rig. Ever thought of one? That's my next research plan. Along with everything else. Lol

I honestly didn't notice the rust until you mentioned it. Then I noticed a little over the fender arch trim on the passenger rear.

As for a rack on mine, I've never had the need, so I've never even considered one. I have been thinking of selling the topper in favor of a mid-rise model though.

I'm thinking a rack of some sort at least for Kayaks.

Just got a few pics back from the painter. Looks like they found a bit more rust and had to replace the front fenders.

I put one on my ranger, best decision I've ever made, if you're gong for no frills one they aren't a terrible price- I used a Vantech, rather than spending crap loads on Yakima pieces here's the link if you aren't going to build it

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P2QQCDG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

right now I got a new cap that I have to reinforce for the rack and it's killing me not being able to haul my boats

Man, I like the price of that! I'll have to look at that a bit more carefully later. Need to make sure 2 kayak mounts will work with it. Also I'd like to have the kayak mounts to be able to be transferred from the pickup to the Touareg just in case we take the VW. I don't have crossbars on the Touareg yet so I'm open to anything. Was originally thinking Thule but again, that's expensive.
