Superwinch Winch-in-a-Bag?

I think we could all recount a story of a bad winch nomatter what brand.

True. I just happened to be there spotting the other driver when it happened so IMHO I'd leave them alone until they prove themselves reliable especially since they're an unproven brand. It can also be an very expensive mistake to buy the wrong winch when a bad one can mean a $$$$$$ extraction/tow bill.

How it attaches: Attach strap to your recovery point on one end, and the winch body on the other. Attach winch line to your anchor. Connect wires and go.

The winch will probably get suspended in the air at some point.

Think of it more as a battery powered come-along than a winch.

Hmmm...so the winch is sort of "suspended." Interesting. I think your last sentence about it being a motorized come-along hits the nail on the head. It's really not a winch but sort of a "half winch" for those who don't need the expense or the weight of the "real deal."

That would actually include me.

Any idea on the price?

I don't see the point. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can get that capacity out of sturdy come-along, with more flexibility and less weight, and no need for a power source.

Good point. For as often as I'd use it, I'll stick with my come-along, and add a snatch block if I need a little more oomph.

Exactly! You never know when you're going to need the winch or how much pull it'll take to free the vehicle. My thought is if you're spending that kind of money on a winch, why not get one that is on the oversized end of the spectrum? If you don't use it so what. It's when you need it and don't have it that can get expensive! One of my pet-peeves is when someone tells me I don't need one or when someone tells me my 9K is too big for my vehicle.

Because installing a winch requires more than just buying a bigger winch. You also need a big heavy winch bumper up front, and then you need another receiver mounted winch for the rear. Something like this you could use on any recovery point, be it a hook, shackle, or whatever, and you don't need any additional hardware.

I know people say you need a winch with 2x the capacity of the vehicle weight, but that just seems ridiculous to me. What are you doing, pulling your truck up into a helicopter? If you're stuck that bad and pulling out with a winch, it seems to me like you did something you shouldn't have done, or did to impress your obstacle tackling rock crawling friends. Since this is Expeditionportal, I would assume most people get stuck because of lack of traction.

What do I know though, I've never used a winch

That's really funny. I had been working on "designing" (designing = scribbling some rough sketches on notebook paper, trying to convince my girlfriend it was cool, and then forgetting all about it) something EXACTLY like that (with the exception of mine having a metal bowl underneath it to keep it out of the dirt before and after winching.
I guess it wasn't as dumb of an idea as I thought it was.

I've been thinking about something like this too. The only thing similar I had seen was the Harbor Freight one, which I think is weaker and looks like it's made of plastic.

I have one of these. I have 2 d ring mounts front and rear on my 95 YJ and I can attach it there for great flexability. I have some snatch blocks and plenty of other tackle to help increase the lower pulling capacity of this unit. I have not had to use this for an actual recovery yet but I have tested it and here is how it went. 2850 lb 95 YJ wrangler in 4wd with parking brake set. Jeep sitting on clean dry blacktop of my driveway. straightline pull to a large maple tree in my yard. winch had no trouble skidding all four tires across the pavement. I don't think it would have much trouble at all unsticking my mostly stock jeep from the occasional mud hole or rock hang up, even if I had to use a block to double it to get 4000 lbs of force it should not be an issue. Hope this helps someone out in making a descission. In years to come if my jeep grows and has bigger tires etc this winch may not keep up. but for now it is with in my budget and seems to fit my needs.

Thanks for the review! I was about to post a thread about the WIAB being released, so I googled for reviews and this ver thread was one of the first results :sombrero:.

I think I'll have to get one for some security when I go out on trails or even remote beach parking areas by myself. It sounds like you've established that 2000lb is a LOT of pulling power. Not the best device for rock crawlers but I've never been stuck more than this thing could handle.

The SuperWinch website has some interesting calculations for sizing a winch. Basically, you only need a fraction of vehicle weight in pulling power to pull a vehicle on flat pavement (makes sense). Factors such as gradient and surface conditions add to the pulling requirement.

It only has 40' of line, so that might limit my rigging options, but I figure 175 bucks for something that will probably never see the outside of the bag, why not?

Anybody have any more recent experience than previously in this old thread?

$175 is a good price for 2500lbs one. Too bad the shipping kill the deal for me, $33 for shipping to California.

Well My Jeep has grown up just a bit since I posted this. I don't think this winch would do me much good at this point! I have a 10,500 lb recon with synthetic line now.
