I am going to build one and have many ideas.. I also have researched many companies... But I am curious what has worked for those here..

and what latching system do you have/wish you had?

...Not as fancy as some of the levers and latches I've seen, but it's clean, solid, strong, and there's virtually NO WAY that it can fail:

The whole thing is sleeved - EXACTLY the size of the pin so it's VERY TIGHT, and there's no play or movement. I put a rubber bushing in there to eliminate vibration. As I said - It's easy, clean, simple, and fool proof, and it's given me no problems in nearly 2 years that I've had my swing away Tailgate/Tire Carrier.

Nice build up..... I like that latch system everyone I talked to about it really likes it also... But the KISS method has it's benefit!

Last one I built I used 3/4 Hiems for the hinges and a big hangle Hitch pin as a latch modified with a spring. I (230lb) could sit on the 35 inch BFG (92lb) and my kid could easily swing the gate if the truck was level.

Some so so pictures here. http://coloradok5.com/packitup.shtml My carrier actually foermed the rear doors on my last truck.

This go around I am going to do something like Deathrunner did but use the Heim's. I like the placement on his truck, same way I did my last one.

I do not like full width gates. To much weight and if you are on a tight trail with a group and the guy behind you pulls up tight you may not be able to get in the back with a single gate.

One thing to keep in mind with the hinges sold by rockstomper, AtoZ, etc., is that everything is riding on that one, single, point. If that pin fails, you lose your tire carrier. I have talked with half a dozen people who have had this happen...and was the primary reason I scrapped mine. (I always had visions of it falling off while going down the freeway...with both 5 gallon gas cans full....and with a schoolbus full of kids behind me.)

I prefer carriers with a minimum of three attachment points...two hinges and one latch. If one hinge fails, you still have something holding it on.

If you are not opening it all the time, I really like the latch pin that sar_squid posted. It might get annoying if you are constantly opening the tire carrier though....

I've posted this before but I'll throw it out there again since this is a tire carrier parts thread:) I figure if the hinge lets go, it's unlkely that the grade 8 1/2" bolt in the latch will fail at the same time. I used this design from atoZ fabrication. When I tighten this latch there is zero play.
