Seconding the layer approach.

I haven't done any proper snowshoeing but I have hiked in winter.

Rather than a heavy insulated pair if pants I would recommend getting a pair of merino wool leggings and shirt.

Once you start moving you're going to get hot fast.

For layering, nothing beats Wickers. www.wickers.com
They usually hold a 20% off sale monthly. Everything they make is manufactured in the USA. they even have fire retardant base layers.

This thread seems to be aimed more at lighter weight pants...But, has anyone used Filson double tin pants. Sound good and solid, which is what i need. $180.00 though!

The old Paramount went to 36"; the new ones don't. Didn't sell enough.
The old ones fit great, btw. But very very light and "trim fit".
I have a pair of those that are now 15 years old. They are ugly, waxy, not very comfortable and stand up by themselves. They also have never been washed. Been through lots of stuff and still work perfectly. Everything I have from Filson is amazing and worth the money in my opinion.

Thank you gophere. I figured they be stiff and not as comfortable as a different fabric. I would only wear them in the jungle.

They are waxed pants. Not quite sure if you would want to wear those in the jungle though. They are waterproofed, and pretty damn warm.

Is the "cut" bad or are they just stiff gophere?
The ones I tried on weren't stiff at all. They were heavier than typical zip-off fishing pants but lighter than bdu material.
Not the least bit stiff at all.

Duluth Firehose material is HEAVY but not the least bit stiff too. Unlike Cabelas cotton hikers which are medium weight and stiff...

Cabelas has an "outdoor" pant in their casuals line. it is a cotton non insulated pant that has lasted me 3 years now but they do have some issues. 1 the reinforcement rivets can snag and bend the rivet, I actually have had to use a pair of pliers to flatted 2 rivets back into shape. Other than that they work well.

I bought a few pair of these this Summer, two pair in ripstop 65/35 and one in5.5 Oz moisture-wicking nylon. They are Tru-Spec 24/7 Eclipse Pants. So far I really like them. Careful shopping will find them well under $50 bucks.

These look like the pants you would bend the iPhone 6+ when you sat down. ( insert Eddy Murphy laugh ) No seriously, I wear the Riggs Wranglers that get my vote. I weld sometimes and don't always think to change. I would catch my ******** on fire. These pants with the double layer and ripstop camo my mistakes. My wife is getting sensitive to all my clothes having little holes.

I find myself liking my Riggs more and more. I have lighter weight stuff I wear in summer, but now that it is cooler they are perfect.

Another vote for the Riggs for my everyday work pants. I'm rough on clothing and can wear out the best within a few months as a hands on general contractor. These hold up the best but are a bit stiff till they've been run thru the wash a dozen times. A soak in a bucket with some Downey will speed the softening if need be.

For warmer weather down to about 40° or so my favorite by far is the Kuhl revolver. I even wear them to work but only on days that won't have me on a piece of heavy equipment, too much grease on everything.

5.11 taclites are nice but very baggy and I like a baggy fitting pant. What the heck is the rope at the rear pocket for anyway??
