Tacoma TRD Pro driven

In 2012-2014 model years, Toyota offered a Tacoma suspension upgrade package called TRD T|X Baja Series. For 2015, the package has been re-engineered, and given a simplified name: TRD Pro.

Pickuptrucks.com got a chance to drive a Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 with the new suspension in the Nevada desert. Result: "the best grouping of off-road parts and pieces in a midsize package that any truck maker has offered."

The TRD Pro suspension gets softer front springs that ride more comfortably at slow speeds, yet still absorb big whoops and suspension hits. The Bilstein shocks are similar to last year's Baja package, but are re-valved for better compliance.

The Motor Trend article linked above reports that the Tundra, 4Runner and Tacoma versions of the TRD Pro suspension all retain the stock rear springs. The reason is to maintain the carrying capacity.

You might get better rough road performance at the rear by changing to some softer springs. For example, Ford went with softer springs on the Raptor, reducing the cargo capacity from the standard F150's 1850 lb (Supercrew 4x4, 6.2L V8) to about 1200 lb.

However, for an ExPo-style vehicle, which packs camping gear, extra water and fuel, having the stock cargo capacity is a good thing.

Looks like you're having a conversation with yourself in here Chip. :D

Perhaps people are tired of waiting for Toyota to refresh those particalar vehicles...and want something new...the Tacoma is going on 10 years
old now.

Some shocks and badging is kinda ho-hum to aging platforms. c'mon Toyota quite dragging your feet...and breathe some new life into these vehicles.

I'm looking forward to the new TRD Pro... I like the idea of the Ford Raptor but not the associated price tag and would rather have a Tacoma.

If Toyota can make them happen for a couple thousand more than the TRD package it would seem like a good option.

I saw a 4Runner Pro driving through the canyon the other day. Looks pretty cool. But like the other trucks, getting a bit long in the tooth. Refresh is definitely a necessity at this point.

But I do hope they continue to offer these Pro series.

I know several people that are wanting to purchase a new mid-size truck...but are waiting and seeing what is coming. Seems like there is quite a bit of interest in the GM Colorado/Canyon...especially the diesel.

Why buy a brand new Tacoma right now, when it isn't exactly stellar? and basically 10 year old tech.

The Ram Eco-Diesel is only new truck that peaks my interest...don't know if I could buy a Dodge product though. Maybe if it had an available manny trans....maybe... :) Do think think that the Rams are the best looking out of all them right now...didn't think I would ever hear myself say that! :D

I actually wouldn't mind buying a new Tacoma today. Even with the dated design, it would still cover my needs. But that MPG is the major issue that is keeping me from buying one. When that Ram you've got pictured, or the F150, or other full size trucks are getting BETTER mileage, buying a Tacoma seems to make less and less sense. Add to that the Canyon diesels that are coming--doesn't help the situation for Toyota.

They can solve this issue by bringing over them Hilux/diesels!

Yep, that is exactly what I am thinking. No doubt the Tacoma is a great little truck, will fill most needs. Real hard not to look elsewhere though, since it needs some updating in the fuel consumption department.

My goodness if they made a Tacoma that got 25 MPG , I'd sell my right arm to get one (might make driving a manual difficult) ... I can't understand why Toyota hasn't come around to a mid size truck that gets better mileage .

A quick search on Fuelly shows that most of the V6 Tacoma's are getting about 17 mpg over the years ...pathetic .

Look at what most f150s get on fuelly

Over-all average seems to be around 16...not great, but it is a lot more truck than Tacoma, can configure to nearly a 2000 lbs, payload. Buddy of mine new F150 averages 20 mpg's in his RCLB with the 5.0. It is bone stock.

The Ram EcoDiesel looks good. From review "The small diesel and tall final gear allowed the 5,800lb pickup truck to average an impressive 24.2 MPG during my week with the truck which included out towing, hauling and 0-60 tests. On the open highway it had no trouble averaging 29 MPG at 70 MPH."

Buddy's ecobost crew cab averages 17.4 city, 21 highway.

That new Ram half ton diesel really runs pretty good. Nothing at all like the Cherokee diesels. I only drove it ten miles but still....
