Tappet failure

Hey colo how does that 'air lifting' system work? Does one need that to apparatus just to flush the coolant and get all the air out of the system? I know I need to change the coolant on mine, but don't know how simple of a job it actually will be without something like that.

It works by creating a vacuum in the coolant system which sucks out all the air and pulls coolant in.

Here she is! Tickless!

Even though I am a Tech, I did not use air tools. All work done with hand tools except my airlift for coolant which is nice but not necessary. I still need to set timing. She stumbles a bit even though I cleaned out the evap ports. She did this before the cam and tappet failed. I do have a code 48 but I am not worried about that.
I really hope this thread helps someone out!

Cam wise it is running great! I am currently chasing down a code 48. I suspect it is because I have not set base idle since installing the cam. Lifter noise is gone though!

Great thread. You included many helpful details.

I have been running this same cam since 2009 in my GEMS 4.0. I noticed a difference in power for sure. I think fuel mileage increased in some situations as well. It hard to tell though because I installed the cam at the same time as a valve job, and all new gaskets.

As far as oil goes I researched the topic extensively. I feel that there are many quality oils that will protect the flat tappet cam without additives.
I have used Amsoil 10-40 and 20-50 Mobil 1 15-50 and Shell Rotella. It all depends on whether you want Dino or Syn and what grade you prefer.

I am running Rotella 10-30 right now with no complaints. Rotella has been proven in many flat tappet engines.
I may try Mobil Delvac 1300 next time though, it is on sale right now at Advance Auto for $12.99 with an additional $5 mail in rebate from Mobil. You can't beat HDEO for $8 a gallon. Its a very comparable product to Rotella some say better, and I have had good luck when I ran it in my Powerstroke.

You really cannot beat that!
