TD5 or 300TDI into a NAS D2?

So, if I went the whole-vehicle route, anybody know, is it cheaper to ship via RORO, or via containerization?

I find TD5 Discos are surprisingly cheap in running condition. Just need to find one that's wrecked.

Edit: Hmmm... never mind, looks like RORO is cheaper?

Also wonder if I'd be better off getting a wrecked rover for cheap, or one in fine shape, more parts (body panels) to part-out and recoup costs. I don't know if there's much demand for body parts, interior, etc? I guess the axles, TC, and other bits would have some value.

Ro Ro is cheaper, but I recall you cant have anything in the vehicle.

a container could be packed with lots of spares. making it far cheaper if shared costs are considered.

Can you just get a "front cut" where the seller cuts a wrecked vehicle in half and sends you everything from the firewall forward?

Just here...
I emailed Global about this sort of thing but never got a response. MOT failure diesel Discos are cheap in the UK. They rust out, fail inspection and then have owners looking to offload them for cheap, like less than the robbery most charge for a used motor of questionable/ unknown background. I was wondering if it was a possibility to bring in a Disco that has flunked inspection with a rusty body that way all pieces would be available in one spot. Sort of like the half cuts you can get for many cars and trucks out of other countries. My question was if is it even possible to import a post 1985 vehicle for parts since there is no way that it is legal on the road (even though the vehicle itself isnt going to see the road).

Ok, so that explains why I've read that you just remove the intank pump and that's all there is to it. I think I've found that the TD5 requires an electric lift pump, and then an electric fuel sending pump in the gas tank.

Seems like a really good resource here:

I did a little legal digging at lunch. Went to an emissions test center to ask what happens if I show up for an emissions test in a gas vehicle, that is converted to diesel. He called his help line, and he said that they would simply test it as a diesel, but I would have to have my ownership converted to show diesel at the licensing office. But as far as they were concerned, no real issue. So I went to the licensing office, to ask what needs to be done to convert my vehicle from gas to diesel. She said "I just have to change the G to a D". "And you can just do that?" "Yeah." "Do I need some paperwork or something?" "No, I don't think so. But call this number."

Seemed way too easy at this point.

Called the 800 number, and the person I spoke with there, said there IS a form to be filled out, and the other lady should have known about it. But they didn't. I asked if she could tell me what the form was called, so I could search for it. I just want to see what's required. She couldn't tell me, and had no details. I'm supposed to go back licensing office, and ask them for the form, and if they don't know of it, call THEIR 800 number to ask for more info.

Now that's more like the beuraucracy I was expecting. :coffeedrink:

But, nobody has said 'No' yet so that's good.

I went through the same concerns, having a NAS 110 (that only came in petrol v8) and when I went to do the first emissions, they then saw it was diesel now, recoded it, and told me I was exempt. No paperwork at all. Their computers link to the DMV, so now when it comes time to re-register each year, I only have to do safety. I'm already flagged as exempt.

This is what Rob needs to do. Do NOT buy a whole vehicle. a half vehicle has everything you need and is considered "Auto parts". A whole vehicle is considered a vehicle, and since it won't be 25 years old, will be blocked from entry.

Rob, if its anything like Virginia, you need to do the swap and get it running well and then drive it to an inspection station where they will verify that it is now a diesel powered vehicle. Then go to the DMV and theyll process and issue a new diesel title. They told me its not that hard. They didnt even require that it be from a newer vehicle model year like you would if doing a gas motor swap.

So, are there any people who actually sell halfcuts?

many in the UK. Key words to google for is land rover breaker (that is an auto salvage yard in the UK).

In Rob's case he only has to go back 15 years but the caveat still applies. Stuff coming into Montreal gets blocked/destroyed all the time - or so I'm told.

He lives in Canada- that may or may not be an issue for him. IIRC they are at a 15 yr cut off (not that there are any 15 year old DIIs but their other regs may vary vs. ours too.)

didnt see it in the thread, but the TD5 is not bolt in, the frame is different in the front to hold it as far as I have seen. 300tdi and 200tdi should bolt in. TD5 is also all electrical and you will have to rewire the engine harness and parts of the body harness. I would do a MB or VW diesel purely for the ease of finding parts.

Huh, well, had some help picking up the truck. I was able to drive it onto the trailer under it's own power. Made some buzzing noise but... I've dropped it off at a trans shop. I'm going to have a look at the fluid, and do a power flush, and see what happens. Maybe I can salvage this summer. I wouldn't go to far with it, but if I can hold off to gather funds and do the job over the winter, that would be awesome.

I'm not going to buy a new trans, but if I can fix it with just a power flush or something simple.... still don't trust the thing though.

Good thread anyway, so let's keep it going in any case.

Just wait three years and 1998 DIIs (the first year they were registered in the UK) will be available for import to canada. I believe Revor aka Keith at rovertracks.com did a TD5 conversion in a disco but that is the only one I know of in the states.

My understanding was I could still bring the vehicle in, as long as I say it's for parts, can't register it.
