Expect between 1.5-2k depending on what the truck needs and how much you have them do.

I'm Getting Around To It
I got the "pre-cat" gutted on Jorge's 86 and the exhaust put back together. We fought a dead battery and took it for a short drive around the neighborhood, then I mis-stabbed the distributor Josh gave us just before it got dark, so we'll try that again tomorrow. The thing runs great, so I'm hoping I'll get it right pretty directly and that it takes care of the problem with the exhaust glowing cherry red when under load.

Still have to drop the gas tank and replace all the little hose for the expansion tank-things, since that was one reason it flunked emissions. And it needs a replacement catalytic converter, based on the numbers it ran the time I took it through emissions. Then Jorge gets to buy more tires!

He's still taking apart his '89's front end. Hopefully the lessons I learned the hard way on my '86 go a little way to saving some time and effort on his, like how to break loose the upper a-arm shaft nuts before removing the arms from the truck, and a couple of other things I've forgotten until I see them. Anybody want to stop over and help install the Aussie Locker? I'm sure he'd go in on some Mt. Dew.

Hi all,
Hoping im posting correctly. Just picked up a '94 SR with a 164,000. Been sitting for 3 years & wont start

- Replaced ignition switch
- Engine does have spark, really good spark. pulled (2) front spark plugs that can be reached and they do have fuel on them.
- checked fuel pump relay and its good.
- Timing belt is in tact, not broken.
- The motor cranks but will not start, every few rotations white smoke comes out of the throttle body but that is it.

- Checked timing marks at CAM indicators and when they are lined up correctly the indicator on the harmonic balancer the indicator is quite a few degrees off. Is there a way top align the timing and check without pulling the harmonic balancer?

When motor is zero degrees at TDC using the harmonic balancer & timing indicator as a reference, are the cam marks all suppose to align at each cam to the head marking/indicator?

Maybe some of the other guys know different, but when we spoke on the phone earlier I don't know of any markings on the HB that will help you with lining up the timing marks. Best bet is to pull that sucker off and get down to the crank gear to see where you're at. Then we can stop the guess work and see what's really up. Pull the crank bolt and gently see if the HB wants to move. A lot of times it won't want to, as the HB and crank gear tend to get stuck together. Don't pull too hard or you can pull the crank gear off with the HB and take out your crank sensor, plus the crank gear is kind of soft pot metal and can chip easily. Yep, I did it on Pop's truck, and it just created more issues. If it won't budge see if you can squirt a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone in there somehow and let it work. You should be able to break it loose at some point and then we can see what's really going on. Good luck.

I would suggest pulling spark plug 1 use a long screw driver and put the cylinder it at top dead center with the cams lined up correctly (the marks wont be lined up if the piston is at TDC due to being on the exhaust stroke though so keep that in mind) and THEN check the harmonic balancer timing marks, if the cams are lined up and the harmonic balancer is close to zero, it's correctly timed, i say close to zero because there's some variance in that cover, it shifts and moves around some and can crack. helps to use a camera phone on video and put it down there so you can see the marks at a more 'straight on' point of view. but if the piston is

I'm up for another trip up there, this time there should be some snow. If your itching let me know i'll go again. I went to the coke ovens this past weekend and crossed the gila in hopes that I would have a river with some water to give the new snorkel a test. No such luck though, to bad.

So as I thought it must have skipped a few teeth somehow. Gonna put everything back to factory, partially reassemble and check for visible & audible damage as well as compression. If all checks out well I'll consider myself to be the 1 in a million lucky person bout it's doubtful.

Next step more than likely looks like a tear down of the motor... :/

There's a decent chance you got lucky, Charper. I hope for the best for ya. I (we) have been hearing about aftermarket timing belt tensioners failing recently, so don't skimp on that part; go OEM. Your compression test should tell all. Keep us posted.

"Some" snow? Have you seen my You Tube videos from the New Year's Day trip Hope and I made with Motero a few years ago? It gets heavy up there, and this week has been wet; this storm coming through tonight is supposed to be colder and a bit bigger as well. It doesn't look like just challenging, it may actually make that trail back into dangerous. So, yeah, I'm interested.

That's the spirit JB! Take pictures cuz I've had enough of this precipitation. Adam and I went out in Rainbow-Brite while it was raining and took turns churning the rocks. It felt like being back home; that constant cold wetness and lack of traction! Low range in his truck is pretty stellar though and watching the rain clouds hide the superstitions was pretty cool.

I know i'm exaggerating this but Josh did a "red shift" from 1st to 2nd on a short climb while in low range, it was a nice little jolt! You can tell he's used to slippery mud not slippery granite, manual trans offroad still sucks! I kept pushing the clutch in after cresting a boulder so it made for a bouncy ride.

Adam got a little jumpy because I spun a couple tires power shifting into second :sombrero: but I was only doing as I was shown (we left my driveway sideways, tires spinning, in the rain and him behind the wheel with a mad grin on his face. :smiley_drive:) The truck flexes nice, once Adam gets the hang of the left pedal it wont flop around like a fish out of water when coming down the hills.

Yeah, i'm just jealous because I don't know how to change gears during a tire roast.
