The DiscoDavis Discovery 3 Build Thread

There was no cut outs or such on the threaded studs for mine.

I did them up finger tight. I don't see there being a problem with them.
Never seen a guide or such with the Allen key stuff.

Excellent. I had the same. Maybe it was some youtube install video with a chi-com version that had them. Had me worried :sombrero:

Not quite. You would have to catch it soon enough, which would be very difficult to do.

The more likely scenario is that you have an error which throws everything out of whack, but the compressor still functions. The car will throw up a fault and then may lower itself to its bump stops. Then, it won't raise or respond to the height selector lever because of the fault. In this situation, you would normally be stuck on your bump stops and have to call a tow truck or drive very slowly. If you have an IID tool however, you can plug it in, then tell it to put the suspension into "build mode". This effectively isolates the mechanics from the computer or perhaps just turns the computer/ECU off. At this point, you can then tell the IID tool what height you'd like each corner to be at and (assuming your compressor isn't mechanically broken) it will raise the car up to that height. As long as you don't take the IID tool out of build mode, you can drive it like this. You will still have your red warning on the dash, but the car will no longer drop to its bump stops.

Yes this. The switch does only part of what the IID tool is capable of. Both can disable the EAS computer through either depowering (switch), or through software (IID). The switch cuts power to everything but the compressor, which doesn't matter because the valve blocks won't have power either.

Nataktenga things showed up...

You may notice Ray mentioned these things way earlier in the thead. I placed an order and promptly forgot I had done so. Was pleasantly surprised when I got a package from the UK (ordered from 4x4overlander) :). They shot me a personal email with contact info in case I had any questions about the order, very cool dudes. Should solve the airflow-while-sleeping issue nicely.

I did order the ones WITH mesh, glad I did too. The mesh quality is very good, I assumed it would be mosquito netting but it is a sturdy aluminum mesh. Great for those meth-heads attempting to poke sticks and god knows what else through the tiny vent holes.

They look like they would indeed sheet rain off just fine, not sure about if it is blowing sideways with some gale-force winds but the angles are good.

Only bummer (not really) was one corner had bent during shipping, it bent back by hand just fine with no marks/ripples.

Installation was easy-peasy. They just sort of slide into the window frame, and then the glass winds up into the provided aluminum channel at each vent bottom. The D3 window motors stopped right when they sensed pressure, I was pleasantly surprised to see they did not attempt to crush or force the vents into the top of the frame. Fitment was 100%, tight, no play.

I kept them on the truck and went off to work. I can report they are perfect for around town, and at the jobsite. No worrying about cracking open windows or the sunroof in the heat, the vents do a good job of cooling everything down. My commute consists of a few hours on the highway too, so I can report back about wind noise. I will wait and see about dust/particulate matter but I would probably take them off if you are near construction sites or doing unpaved roads out in the bush. You could honestly use some panty hose or tape to cover the vents if you really wanted to run them in the dust.
>55mph/88kph is the sweet spot, minimal noise, good ventilation, no buffeting of air, you can talk on the phone fine (with hands-free/bluetooth of course, officer ;)).
>65mph/104kph is the upper limit for phone call/talking clarity, the vents start to get loud and the air flow is more gusty/buffety
>70mph/112kph is annoying. Not quite as bad as cracking the windows at that speed, but I almost wanted to get off at an exit just to get some quiet time for the drive home. Forget about calling your wife and telling her you'll be late for dinner. It's going to be a loud affair. To be fair this was on a packed freeway, so other cars added to the din.

They look great and seem good for security. They will not budge, and the only pry points I can see are where the window fits into the aluminum channel. I imagine if someone tried there they would break the window in doing so anyway. I took them out this morning for my commute but may flip-flop between keeping them on/off. It only takes 20 seconds to walk to each window and change them out.

Nice .I was looking at these louvers previously, but the website showed a D2 product only. I am also debating on the company's Stainless Steel rear bumper tire carrier.

Whoa... I had forgotten that they even made one of those... Guess that swingout may go on the list. RE: the vents, I kid you not, the way the sales guy explained it to me via email was that dimensions for the rear windows on the D3/D4 are the exact same as the D1/D2... apparently they never changed much in that area when Land Rover did the redesign in 1998, or again in 2004. Go figure...

Can't wait.................. Hope you don't mind, I think many of us are pirating off your build..hahaha

Workin' on it :)

Don't mind at all, glad to pass along ideas, much of which was passed along to me (cue Ray's excellent eBay linking skills) or something I saw someone else do, I am waiting on Victory's triumphant return eh ;)

Spoke to Barbara at 4x4 Overlander via email today. She's sending my shipping quote for two sets of the window security vents. I may gift one set to my buddy. I figure two sets in the mail to Hawaii can't be much different. She said they do their absolute best to pack them secure but small for us US bubbas to save us money. Classy customer service.

I'm stoked to get them here.

I think it's good how we all feed off each other's builds. I tend to follow a well worn path on the Internet and this forum is the one I've found for D3/D4 inspiration in North America-D3.uk, AULRO and such are all excellent but the diesel availability makes me jealous!
