I have to admit to having an Indiana Jones hat. Kinda silly, but I like it, and it's good quality. I believe it's made of oiled cotton rather than felt.

I'm currently torn between these two Outdoor Research hats. Both have lifetime warranties, float, appear to have a high quality and are very much in my budget.

It seems like the synthetic would be more durable, but the cotton one looks like it would breath better, note the side vents.

I rock an army-surplus special "jungle Hat" and frankly it's the best hat of it's kind. Cheap, durable, fast drying, and did I mention DURABLE..........I'm a bit of a Hat-fiend and frankly NOTHING compares to an Akubra or my Military spec hat for bush hats... sorry, but alot of these hats look like they wouldn't last a week out on some of my adventures.
It's this exact model and it's the best, hands down... Just wide enough to keep the sun out and not so wide that you can't see where you're going. Plus all of the above mentioned attributes.
5.99 at my local Ary-Surplus wasn't too abd compared to what I have paid in the past for one of thse OR hats for instance $25.00.

For far less than half the price of the OR hats, these are probably worth trying. I would prefer something besides black, so I'll try the khaki even though I think it will get terribly dirty.

Well, after getting burned in Mexico, Moab and again this weekend working on a sprinkler system at home, I decided enough is enough!
So I finally pulled the trigger on the Transit Sun Hat in Fossil. :victory: Looking forward to putting it to good use.
Hopefully the grey-ish color will help keep it looking cleaner.

When it's hot, sunny, buggy, etc., there's no substitute for a kaffiyeh. It's a hat, a scarf, air conditioning, a bug net, instant shade, a tourniquet, a filter, a rag, the list goes on. Cheap, easy to store, easy to wash, durable, and essentially disposable. When it's 105º+ in the desert, my wet kaffiyeh on my head makes it seem 20º cooler. Instant comfort.
Only downsides is that it's kind of a trendy piece of gear, and depending on where you stop in for supplies, it can attract some funny looks from the...ahem...locals.

I'll throw in my vote for a Tilley. I haven't tried the vented version yet, but I plan to. If out in the rain for a length of time, I switch over to a north face waterproof since the Tilley will soak through eventually.

New to overland-what to do a big build and trip badly but sadly the funds are there (yet!)
I'm terrible at gift ideas so over the years I've mentioned these two CC Filson hats. They are both oil cloth so too hot for summer but I'm pretty sure I'll have them for a long time if I don't loose one.
My fly fishing choice is the Filson Bush hat and I've recently added the packer for it's smaller brim as a travel hat.
They are both pretty stiff brimed so you can shape them pretty easily-I can't tell you how many ticks the bush hat kept off me while fishing in the NC mtns.

Being an Aussie, i reckon you just can't go past an original Akubra hat (US site) for all of your outdoor adventures.
I've reused these pictures from one of my websites which is why the date is on them...anyway...
When i'm spending time in deserts or jungles where either the sun is beating down or the water is coming down in buckets, i usually thow on my Akubra "Coober Pedy" which has a nice wide brim on it.
If i'm up in the mountains, the iconic Akubra "Snowy River" gets to come out.
For other occasions when driving or just travelling in general, my Akubra "International" makes a showing. According to their website and backed up by my own personal experience..."This hat has a unique memory which allows it to be manipulated back to shape if mistreated".
I used to occasionally wear baseball caps (and have a pretty good collection of them), but someone once told me, "if you are not an american and don't play baseball you shouldn't be wearing a basball cap"...makes sense...plus, i first started wearing Akubra's in the 1980s and it's become a bit of an addiction over the years.
The only excpetion to my Akubra rule is when i am out on foot doing the mountain trail thing and don't want to risk loosing my hat in a breeze...that's when i grab my hat that is manufactured by another Australian company called Frillneck

Yep, if you like hats of this nature, you owe it to your self to look into Akubras. They're hard to swallow buying from here in the states, I got mine in Australia at a local feed store for oh $75 US... I still love my Ak, but I find it hard to find times to wear it now that I live in this awful thing called a city and spend zero time on a horse mustering cattle anymore... I need to move back to Australia, I really miss it.
