Well I finally had a few nights to work on it. I got the head off and here she sits.

Here's the block...

Here's what you get when you drive from the Expo Trophy to L.A. with a blown head gasket...at least that's my guess.

So, I pulled the pistons and here is the number 5 piston. Exactly as Robbie had said over the phone. Not a cracked ring, but the piston had tried to weld itself to the cylinder. Robbie I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to assist me with this.

Think they'll bring in any cash on the parting out section? HAHA. It actually feels really good to get these out of there. I can see the add now, "One set of slightly used, molten lava pistons, with good rods and bearings."

Well Jermery(I hope I remembered right). That is a mild case of predetonation that happened(you should see what a bad case is). If that was not there when you blew the head gasket. it happened when LC tried to tune the truck with the new HG on it. It is fairly common with these S/C'd trucks if the injectors are not keep cleaned, with a Highflow fuel pump in the fuel tank, a FMU or extra injectors to keep the fuel flowing when the lead foot is on the throttle. This is not something you can just hone away and put new rings in the piston. Any how we can still talk on Monday at or around 2pm my time. Mild cases of this the block can still be used, but some time the scoring will not come out no matter how big the new piston is. It would be best to have what ever machine shop look at it to see if it will take a 1mm or 1.25 or 1.5mm (last 2 would be custom pistons).

Well Jereme, I guess we should have put in the SI-1 Red Line injector cleaner/fuel additive I was talking about on our ExPo Trophy trip (or did we, I can't remember).

If you have to pull the block and have it machined as you originally had planned at least the rebuild will be complete and we shouldn't have any issues during the Nevada Trophy ☺ :roost:

As much as I like the fact that your 80 has a supercharger, have you given any thought to leaving off the S/C to avoid future issues after the rebuild?

We did use the Redline additive. The s/c stays, the motor is just going to be built for it. All in time fore NV Trophy. I may just buy a new short block throw it in and have this one massaged a little. That way it'll be running sooner with less worry about the machine shop making our deadlines.

We'll have to wait and see. I speak with Robbie (Powderpig) on monday to get his thoughts.

Not trying to discourage you from buying a short block but do you think doing a complete, proper rebuild of your current engine is going to take that much time? I bet you would be up and running well before the NV Trophy in Sept. The June Hurricane Lake AT trip might be a different story.

Built for the S/C sounds great. New head gasket, add more fuel, should work well.

Well, how did the conversation with Robbie go?

I would love to be able to take mine to him and have him work his voodoo on it, but that won't be happening anytime soon.:Mechanic:

Well, it went well. Pulling the motor. Oversized pistons and maybe, just maybe if we are lucky, all you'll have to drive to see Robbie is to south Reno. depending on how it goes, he may be coming down to do the re-assembly, install and get it running correctly. :victory: We have to wait and see and he's tied up until May.

I'll tell you one thing, I stopped listening to "Angry" music and started listening to more mellow stuff. Marley, The Dead and the such. A couple times, while listening to "Angry" music, wrenches were close to being thrown.

Going to the machine shop tomorrow.

One potentional problem is the bushing for the oil pump drive gear. It must be removed if you hot tank the block, this bushing is not a dealer item or off the shelf item. It can be a bugger to remove as well. It can be reproduced if the machinest is willing. This machinest is in texas.
If the block is just cleaned with solvents then this will not hurt the Bushing. I like hot tanking the best, gets the block the cleanest, but sometime compermise is better than not being able to build something you want. later Robbie

Cool. I hear it's commonly called part no 2011, as in the cost of a bare short block or something. I will talk to them about it tomorrow. Thanks again.
