The Lens Thread!

Matt, I sadly have had the same experience. We don't have many camera shops here in Tucson but I was hoping to give them my business if possible.

Every time I gave them an opportunity they only had lower end lenses in stock but would order anything I wanted. The problem was their best price was still hundreds above what I could get from B&H or Adorama.

Brad,

Did you ask them if they would match or just let it go as the difference was so large? I was looking at a Tamron 16-85f2.8 (I think) that was used but in excellent shape. It is only DX but maybe it would be OK. I got to the price part and it was $550 but he would go $500. That is the same price for new one at B&H. I didn't mention that because I though the chasm was too wide to cross at that point not to mention the price was before sales tax.

I went to B&H when I was in Manhattan once-heck that makes it as much my "local" as the guy around the corner! (OK that's a stretch)

Yes I did ask about matching and they said the just could not meet the online price. If it was close I'd probably give the local the business but when you are getting into high dollar differences it's hard to stay on the support your local business path. :sombrero:

I agree on B&H I have purchased from them for about 80% of my gear.

Adorama is another excellent photo business with great customer support.

Oh well, I guess it doesn't always work out.

If you ever find yourself in Manhattan head over to 34th and 9th (just a couple block from Macy's) make a point to go to B&H. The place takes up a block and is THE toy store for camera fans but be warned, you could go broke quickly.

Too late. I already found them online and I'm already broke. :sombrero:

I have seen Helen's posts on other photography forums like Dgrin. She is an outstanding ambassador for Adorama. Just another fine example of their dedication to their customers. :victory:

I wanted to clarify that I wasn't being critical of Helen, I also use google alert for some of my products so that is where the comment came from.

I don't think (and I hope) any one took it that way but I wanted to be sure.

Welcome Helen!:victory:

No worries. The technology is pretty cool and a great way to track your product's activity on the net.

I wasnt sure if this would be the right place to post this, but I didnt see any other threads where people have posted reviews of the lenses they use.

I just got a new lens, the higly coveted Canon 16-35 f/2.8 and thought I'd post up my thoughts on it.....OMG!!! This baby is the cat's meow!

Steve (XJBanker, Dont read this...LOL) Steve was one of the reasons I bought this lens. I used to have a Sigma 17-35, but it wouldnt work with my Canon 5D full frame body because that lens was made for the cropped sensor bodies.

I loved the wideness of the Sigma on our 30D, but couldnt see keeping it around when I almost use the 5D exclusively, so I started looking for an equivilent that would work. I figured if Steve bought mine, which he did, thank you sir, I could sell off some other gear that I'm not using all that much, and I have another photographer lined up who is going to rent the 16-35 for a week from me for a shoot, I could justify the high price of this lens.

It's way more than I wanted to spend on a brand new one, which would have set me back over $1600. I found one at Sportshooter.com for $1200 that was brand new. Lady said she had put a few hundred clicks through it on a shoot she did, but it was too wide for her liking.

Just got it a few days ago and this thing is amazing.

The focus is lightining fast and totally, 100% silent. I honestly looked away from the eye piece and watched to see if anything was moving when it focused because it does it so fast, it almost makes you think it's just always in focus.

I love, love, love the fact that it internally zooms and there is nothing that moves when you go from 16mm out to 35mm, this is one of my only complaints of the Sigma lenses, which we have a few of and really like them.

The internal zoom will help since we seem to always be shooting in the desert, on the water or other places that dirt, salt and crud can get into the inner workings of the lens.

The lens is a bit hefty, but I personally like the feel of the heavier lenses as they offset the weight of the camera and tend to even the entire package out more.

Plus, it's a fixed f/2.8, which means great low light shooting capabilities.

My only gripe with this lens is the front filter ring being a whopping 82mm. I've been trying to get to the point that all of my lenses have the same filter diameter so I dont have to have a bunch of different filters floating around in the bag. All of Canon's other L Glass lenses use the 72mm filter size, so I've got a pretty good collection of those sized filters. Oh well, only gripe I think of so far.

I'll be heading out later this week to do a few shoots with this thing and cant wait to see the results. On the 5D, it's amazing how wide you can go!! Almost like a fisheye without the distortion!

If anyone is thinking of buying this lens. I'd highly recommend it! Cant wait to use it on the upcoming U.P. Overland trip in August :victory:

Hi Folks...need some advice here...

I may be coming into ~$1,500 or so that I'd like to put towards another lens. Right now I have a D90, w/the kit DX18-105 ED lens + a old beater 70-300 Sigma lens (el cheapo starter lens that is a last resort :) ). I also have few other starter lenses I use w/my backup D70, but the kit lens covers those (and takes better photos).

I used to take just landscape photography, but have been getting more and more into action/activity shots (I recently was the photo dude for a local skateboarding competition). My daughter is also getting into modeling and I'd like to practice portrait/people shots (but this is a lower priority since we're already paying someone else to take her pictures :) )

So any suggestions? My original thought was a 300mm f2.8 lens (they seems to come in around there used)? Any other ideas? I'll know in the next few weeks whether the $$ comes through and am patient so can wait for a good deal on a used lens, I'd rather wait and do it right.

Thanks in advance!

I hear you Pat. I've been using my 16-35 for the past (2?) years now. Awesome lens, even on my 20D. I'd say it's on the camera about 90% of the time.
