You know, he kind of does... did.

Bros, the rear is done.

I took a few days to try and shame Spicer into getting me some parts. They remain unmoved. So, I just put it back together.

Nice to have it back on the wheels. Got it done just as the sun set.

Now I just have to get the stop and turn lights on the rear to work, and I'm pretty close on that. I'll be breaking down in new and exciting places with this pile pretty soon. :bike_rider:

Original Mopar bugflector, son.

So, I moved it around and swapped ends in front of the shop. Looks like the heater core leaks, so I ordered a new one. The HVAC plenum looks like some mongo has been at the screws with a pocket knife. So, that's reassuring.

OTOH, the A/C is holding good pressure and the worst hiccup the engine has had is snapping a pcv when I was putting the valve covers back on, and a mild exhaust leak at the y-pipe.
Brakes are spongy, so I'll bleed them again. The previous owner, a man I refer to as Cigarettes McMuddyboots, replaced some of the brake line and did an ok job on that, but did a rotten job bleeding the system. I'm gonna pull the master and make sure it's not weeping fluid from its back door, so I don't chase my tail too hard. The brake fluid looks a little dirty in the master, so I may do a full system changeout of fluid. That way there are no big question marks hanging over the braking system.

Axle is working fine so far, but the crappy Advance store brand axle seal may already be leaking. I'll check it tomorrow and see what the deal is.

Was going to work on the lights, but it's raining.

Brakes are fixed.
Wheel seal seems okay.
A/C is holding charge.
Battery is charging with alt.
Windows and radio work.
Ordered a new turn switch for it, which should, theoretically, fix the turn/stop signal problem out back.
Gonna spend the weekend getting all the little things done to it and then go get a plate for it Monday.

I'll bypass the heater core for now, and get any drivetrain bugs worked out of it. Then, probably after it's balls cold this fall I'll figure it's a good time to fix the heater.

Trying to find some more steel wheels. I like the way they look. Edit: found steelies on Craig's and bought the whole mess, trim rings and all, for 60 bucks. Gonna have them blasted and then paint them in black epoxy.

Scouring craigs for a topper. Also pondering replacing that piece of trim on the front bumper, conceding the beater thing just a little for some aesthetics.

Great progress! Won't the plastic bumper trim get torn off easily off road? Can you just remove it and have a smooth bottom bumper surface?
Lots of threads out there about cutting a round window in the heater plenum to get all the accumulation of leaves and pine needles etc out.
Keep up the good work!

Yeah, the strip I mean is between the hood and bumper. The bottom stuff does get in the way a little, for approach angles, so I probably should rethink that.

Still working on the turn/stop illumination out back, and didn't get much done this weekend due to other commitments, but I'll make some good progress today. I'm home waiting on the contractors for our kitchen remodel and taking bids all day, so I'll, hopefully, get a lot done. (Just realized this situation is a lot like The Money Pit... more so than I'd thought...)

I found some more camping/glamping gear to add to the truck's stuff. So, I'm just about all set on gear. Found a topper for 100 bucks that I need to go look at and maybe buy.

Found the lighting problem, and it was super simple. Just dirty sockets. I wasn't getting any voltage when I probed them because they were corroded, and the lights weren't getting volts because they ( the lights) were corroded at the contacts One of them isn't going to make it (RIP in Peace, light socket), so I'm going to pick one up tomorrow and install it so I don't have to worry about it being on the fritz.

The trans was a quart low on atf+. Got that filled.

Left on the punch list:
Tag lights
Rehang the trailer wiring and rewrap the bed lights wiring.
Retorque the rear cover
Power steering pump? Power assist has gone to nothing. Hope it's the pump.

Mods list begins with tire shopping.
Probably, I'll have a set of daily tires and a set of more gnarly overlanding tires on separate wheels. Haven't had much time to think about mods, since I've been steppin and fetchin these repairs the last 2 months.
I'm looking at some factory style bumper recess mounted round lights with amber bulbs for fog. The stock 9004 bulbs seem to have enough light for now.

Right now I'm thinking about just focusing on a winch, rubber, and sleeping/camping stuff.

But before I get all lathered up buying stuff, I need to get some miles on this pile and see what breaks or falls off.

Awesome to see you bring this turd back from the helms of ****. I wanted to tell you in case you were interested and haven't replaced it yet, but I do believe that a radiator from a Cummins/V10 truck fits in the half ton core support and clears everything. Also, if you end up needing new calipers and keep the d44, light duty 3/4 ton calipers work perfectly and have a bigger bore diameter. Someone also mentioned the rear wheel cylinders from a 1 ton Chevy. I have those and everything for a complete drum rebuild waiting to go on. There's quite a few things like that that are relatively inexpensive and are upgrades from the heavy duty trucks to make a half ton more stout.

Do some reading about using sport headlight housings and installing relays for better lighting performance. I haven't done the relays yet, but just the sport housings themselves made quite a difference at night.

BTW, how many miles does your truck have? My half ton has 383,352. I brag about my odometer like it's a trophy LOL.

This one reads that it has 305k on it. I'm not sure I believe it. It still has riveted brake linings and the factory steering stabilizer, and some other telltale things. But it's fun bragging rights, for sure.

Stood in line and got my temp tag today. NC gives you 10 days to get an inspection, and then you get a real plate. Taped the paper temp plate to the rear glass because it's supposed to pour rain all week.

Took it for a ride after I fixed the tail lights and cleared the temp sensor code off the ecu finally. I got the wrong sensor twice and jut went down to NAPA today and bought an Echlin part. Done in 5 minutes.

1. The power steering is being a real pain in the ***. I got a bunch of bubbles out of it, but it really only gives you assist with engine speed over 1k rpm. So, I may have to put a pump on it. I'll have to tear into that tomorrow.
2. It's doing a weird low power and stuck in 2nd (maybe) thing. I took it to put fuel in it and rassled it around the curvy roads here with power-thennotpower-power steering. The whole time it was really low on power, which is concerning. It's either in some limp mode or something is off. It should be racing down the road with the EQ heads and 120+ compression on all cylinders. Probably something stupid I forgot. Or maybe one of the 100 nightmare scenarios I have floating in my head (bad cam, bad lifters, bent pushrods, blown head gaskets, etc)
3. I have some weird jangly noise underneath that I need to figure out. Sounds like a loose exhaust clamp jumping around at idle, but increases with engine speed...
4. Tag lights. Gotta fix those. The ends of the pigtails are buggered, so I need new ends. Like 10 bucks and an hour. Necessary for inspection, if I get some boyscout just out of SAE school trying to throw the book at me.

This thing drives like a pregnant whale. I need to check the tire pressure before I drive it again.

Victories:
1. Oil pressure is great. Over 45 lbs hot and idling.
2. Temp is staying solid at 195, even without the shroud on the fan and the leaky POS busted rad in there catching all the garbage floaters in the system. Even idling in traffic it wasn't even creeping, which is kind of a big deal for a v8 without a shroud and a 195 stat.
3. Rear diff is hanging in there just fine.
4. 4wd works. Took it down on my lower property below the barn to clean the detritus out of the bedliner. drove down in 2wd and drove up in 4hi. Light on the dash illuminates, axles actuate, and t-case doesn't groan or moan or crackle. I need to get that t-case saver ordered and on there. But one thing at a time.
5. Radio sounds great. Premium sound, son.
6. Shift indicator doesn't work. Certified beater. It comes out of park, but hangs up at reverse. Perfect.

Onward.

I had the stock steering stabilizer on mine until about 350k. It still had resistance to it and the rancho one I put on didn't make a difference one way or another in driving it. Put that on there trying to track down a weird vibration deal I was getting from hitting hard bumps.

Yeah, I haven't fooled with this one. The truck just has a lot of OE parts still on it, which makes me question if it's really been driven over 300k or not.
One thing that makes me wonder is that the cruise control cable is frayed a wee bit at the throttle body where it comes out of the sheath. That's usually a good indicator of a "highway miles" vehicle.

Either way: in for a penny; in for a pound now.

I'm home again today waiting for the countetop people to show up. So, I get to mess around with it and do some diagnostics and stuff today. Judging from the dodge truck forums, it could be a couple of things, or something really easy and stupid. Lets hope for easy and stupid.

Put that on there trying to track down a weird vibration deal I was getting from hitting hard bumps.

Check the track bar. On $X$'s it has been a problem on Dodge trucks sense the 94's came out. When the wobble gets bad its called death wobble. If you do a google on death wobble you will not have enough time for all that reading.

kraven

Hegelian Scum
Yeah, I started reading about the wobble and just stopped. I've been over the whole front end looking for bad/loose stuff already, but the track bar thing is crazy. There's a couple of aftermarket pieces for it and that brace kit you can put on.
