i pick it up tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!

so i have been searching for the unicorn for about 3 years now. i wanted a fuel injected, 4 speed, barn door burb, without red interior. prefer power options, and must have all a/c parts.

i learned quickly that the 4 speed is the unicorn, though i found a few. but alas, they all sold before finding them. but, i also wanted in this project for around $1-2k. well a little digging around the other day and i find this.

1991, 1/2 ton, 5.7tbi, 4speed auto, blue int/white ext, runs, needs battery.

im getting it for $600!! unfortunately, its a tailgate, but i will just have to live!!!:coffeedrink:

plans are for now:

ord shackle flip with 56" 1 ton springs, 4" fronts to match, prolly try out Ntsqd's rancho source for this. if not, then tough country

35's, maybe 37's if the price is right. prolly in the km2 variety, though i have grown fond of toyo since joining this bored

and in the as near as possible future, NV4500/203/205 with a 3:1 in the 205. cause i crawl.

then a d60/14ff. like to try selectable locker in front. detroit in rear. 4.88's

also the usual: sliders, fridge, bumpers, winche's, rear swing out carrier, etc.......

would also like to try my hand at a solar system. being an ex mechanic and current electrician, it be stupid not to!

will post my own pics this weekend

cheers

You can remove the tailgate and sliding window and replace them with barn doors, all the mounting holes are there, just find a complete donor at the wreckers and swap parts.

well, i go look at it. tell him that as long as it starts we got a deal. couple tries, it starts right up. purring through the magnaflow exhaust.

:wings:

low on fuel, no problem. drive about six blocks to fuel station. i decide to leave it running while i pump. also, i decide to wash windows. while wiping the last window clean, it dies. im thinking to myself, "i just stirred up a years worth of dirt and ruined the pump" great. after an hour, and some throttle body cleaner, she is running. drive the rest of the way home just fine. park it. try to restart, no such luck!

aqny ideas? im putting in a fuel filter and checking the ignition system for worn parts here in about an hour. will have full set of pics this evening.

i hope its not the throttle body!

congrats on the burb!

i think you're going about it the right way. make sure everything is tight replace all fluids and filters then start checking sensors. it sounds like a loose ground or bad connection somewhere. get your batteries and alt checked so you have an idea as to how much life is left in them.

so im for sure on no fuel. in the morning, i will go check through the fuses and relays to make sure the pump is getting power. i have an advance auto parts 2 blocks away, so i can go get a pump if need be. $54

other than that, only other "issue" for me is the passenger door lock cylinder is missing and i dont have a key to the doors at all. so i will be getting some cylinders from chevy. the rest is just cosmetic or luxo stuff.

i do need to find a center console in the roof since this one is gone. as well as fix the driver door window that is off track. otherwise it is a real good deal.

i also found some paperwork that shows it had a reman trans instaled in 04'.

do any of you burb owners have the frongt roof console? would you mind taking a pic so i can see what they look like please? i appreciate it.

Check inside the distributor cap on those trucks. There were a pile of them that had the oil control gooves cut in the wrong direction on the distributor shaft, they would let oil up into the cap and it would turn into a blue/green fuzzy mess, you can't miss it, if so get a new distributor. Make sure the fuel pump is turning on while cranking, you should be able to hear it, it should also run for a couple of seconds after you stop cranking, the ecm turns on when it see's distributor reference (distributor lets ecm know engine is cranking/running). Just a couple of ignition issues that can cause the pump not to run making diagnosis difficult if you don't already know them. There is also a red test lead at the fuel pump relay, apply 12 volts to it and the pump should run, that eliminates replacing a fuel pump mistakenly too. They suck to change.

hey zukrider great find:Wow1:
i can only speak for myself but some of the early chevs had some aftermarket fuel pump compatabilty problems. most were with the multi port fi versus the tbi. we tried three different brand before getting an ac-delco one !was really surprised when the napa one would not produce enough flow for mpfi. also if it is the fuel pump ,please save yourself some headaches and replace the little short harness inside the assembly! keep on with the pics as you progress........lj

update!

i did a bit of research on what it could be, if not a fuel pump. my greatest asset in this research was pirate4x4. for once, they were helpful. all my research was leaning toward the ignition module, magnetic pickup coil, or relay. pretty much in that order of most often the case.

well, im not exactly the best at searching, so i couldnt find any wiring diagrams. so i decided to proceed in that order. but first, i crawled under with my power probe and applied power to the pump directly and it worked fine. so i picked up a module at advance autoparts for $45. get home, put it in, nothing. bummer. double check the research, go back to advance, pick up a pickup coil and the relay to save another trip. $26. this is where the bad day starts!

and i apologize for no pics, my camera was dead.

i begin to take the cap, rotor, etc off again. look at where the pick up is. seems fairly easy, so i start taking the stationary exciter ring off. in the process, i broke the spacer made of i believe to be magnesium. :yikes: so i get online, looking for a breakdown on the distributor. i end up finding a how to on replacing the pickup. which is totally not the way i was going. you must pull the dizy, remove the drive gear, then slide the rotor out the top and then remove the pickup. install in reverse order.

so im back at advance, dizy instock, $100 plus core. but, it comes with the module and mag pickup! and the guy says i can return the ones i had already purchased!!!!

so let me tell you how big of a pain in the @$$ it is to get at the dizy clamp bolt! 3 hours and the last wrench option i own later, its free. i do the parts change over. get it all buttoned up with the help of my broja, turn it over. nothing.............................................wait..................................the fuel pump relay!

$170 dollars worth of parts, 8 hours of labor and research. all for a 2 min, $10 part!

but, now it runs!!!:coffeedrink:!!!

i just need to get the dist timed back to zero, cause i dont own the right distributor wrench to do it while its all bolted together. ill prolly get the wrench so i have one, cause i hate paying people to things i should be able to.

im happy though, and pics as promised!
this is the pic i took the night i purchased. this is where it died on me.
