Glad your trip is going well. Be sure to spent time (lots) in Guanajuato.

I thought so. You can drive down the Baja withou it, but there afterwards you have to have the paperwork stating you are taking the vehicle out of the country. Also, you need to hand that paperwork in BEFORE you leave.
