The saga of my 98 Discovery...

Well if it is a dog to drive I bet it hasn't been regeared with those 255/85s. I run 235/85 on my disco and it is a dog at times...

I've driven some trucks that needed a regearing and this is nowhere near as bad...so it's possible that it has been. I'll have to put it up on stands and check it sometime soon. It's really not bad at all.

After going through the things I've done so far the Disco was running GREAT. Like a completely different vehicle...very responsive, smooth acceleration and shifting...didn't think there were going to be any issues.

Well I'm currently in the mountains of NC with my family. Halfway along the trip I stopped to get a snack. While sitting at idle the oil light began to flicker. I thought maybe it was low on oil so I added half a quart and the light went off....I thought it was taken care of.

On the way up the mountain after about 5 miles of an 8% grade uphill my temp gauge shot up. I pulled over immediately and shut it down. The oil light came on about the same time. After about 5 or 10 minutes I started it back up and everything was good, no oil light and temp was back down to normal.

Kept on going towards the parents house and everything was fine for about 25 minutes. Then when going 35mph on a flat road the temp started to rise again...before it got all the way up I pulled over. After pulling into a parking lot it immediately dropped back down. The oil light was flickering this time as well. Both went away and I continued to the parents house. Got there without incident and shut it down for the night.

So now I'm sitting here scratching my head wondering if the temp and oil light are connected somehow...or if they are separate issues that popped up at the same time coincedintally. There was never any smoking, dripping, or any physical evidence that temp was hot or oil pressure was low. The AC fan was running when I pulled over the first time...and I'm not sure if the clutch fan was running while I was driving (there's a semi loud muffler on there) or at least I didn't think to notice it. It very well could have been, just not sure.

I just experienced this same problem, and then bam water pump went, replaced it and no more issues.

Right on, not wasting any time :smiley_drive:

Got the pan dropped and cleaned out. The pickup taken off and cleaned as well. Then put it all back together. Around 4 hours total...figure it wasn't bad being that I was doing it in the driveway at my parents as opposed to my shop.

There was definitely some stuff in the pickup screen, but not enough to worry me. The bottom of the oil pan was another story...fair amount of old RTV gasket chunks down there. I figure these could have been on the pickup screen when running, then settled down after shutting it off. Might explain things a bit.

The ride home was great, not a hint of overheating...and no oil light. However, got it home, shut it down, and then unpacked. Started it back up to pull it into the shop and there was definitely some valve noise for a few seconds...and the light stayed on for about a second...that didn't happen when I started it up earlier tonight (before driving home). So still not 100% confident with everything yet.

We'll see what happens. I'm gonna change the thermostat and hoses this week...and flush the system at the same time. Might have the radiator pressure tested while it's drained. Also going to change the oil pressure and water temp sensors just to rule those out of my equation.

Glad the trip back went alright, the confidence will come the more you drive it.

Hopefully so...but like I said all 2.5 hours on the way back it was great.

My truck did the same thing and then my oil pump let go. But I have a d2 in the vin range.

I'm hoping this isn't the problem, but I probably won't feel comfortable with everything until the oil pump is changed.

BTW: Have you ever attached an oil pressure gauge to see what the actual reading is? Not a bad idea to run a separate gauge permanently.

It's on my list of to do's. I have a slew of autometer gauges from past projects that are going to get reused for this. I looked last night and I have an oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, and voltage.

I just gotta order new sending units for all of them...they were left in the cars.

And I'm pondering a mounting solution...

I'm gonna get flamed for this. But i have oil pressure and water temp gauge mounted under the hood. Not ideal, but I got the gauges and all for dirt cheap and its better than no gauges at all. For in the cabin I use a scangauge.

I don't think my autometers will hold up under the hood :p

I have ran sunpro's and other gauges under the hood before with good success.

Running gauges right on the motor is really popular in the jet boat circles, gives you a direct link as to whats happening. I only have a fuel pressure gauge mounted directly right now on the boat, but am adding a few more for next season.

You could pull that most likely non working clock for a spot and then you have the ash tray-cubby spots for a few others. A small panel where the POS cup tray slides out would be pretty nice. Get the DII cupholders and put them on the console if you want a cup holder that actualy holds something. It's on my to-do list, right after "install new floor":snorkel:
