The Utilitarian-Camper 2nd Gen Tacoma

Well today a little package showed up so it was time to tackle one of the last "issues" with the flatbed, the fuel inlet. Thanks to Zolo here for giving me a heads up about the issues involved. I decided however I really wanted it to look integrated into the bed so this is what I came up with.

Basically its a racing fuel port. Its water tight and has a nice cam lock to it. Its over sized so I could basically create a water proof tube for the existing stock unit to fit in. It was tricky getting the angles all right to allow all the hoses to line up but I'm happy with the outcome.

Holy smokes.... yeah that's way cooler than my set up. Nice job!! I like it.

Did you line your bed yourself? or pay to have it done. if you did it..Did you roll it on? looks good. I've been tossing the idea of lining mine.. cant decide.

Yes did the bed line myself. I've used a few different types of the bed line with mixed results. I found that unless your doing completely flat panels with no inside corners ect... It works pretty well but as soon as you have complicated shapes, nooks, corners its really hard to stay consistent with texture. I used a schultz gun and sprayed it on. Was way faster and much easier to control the texture and consistency of the liner. I would recommend it and for you they sell tint able liner so you could stay with the white if you like. I will likely be doing the whole process over again when I get to the flippac as I want to bed line the whole thing when its done.

Those steel wheels look light years better than the originals! happy0034.gif

And the bed looks fantastic in black, as does the front, have you thought about bedlining the bright rim of the fuel filler?

Great build.

What about static electricity? It seems the new filler is directly connected to the frame and could cause for an electric reaction in the wrong condition when filling. The filler on my truck appears to be isolated from the body/frame by a plastic/rubber connector.

Are you around working on this today? Would love to come check it out. I'm over by Hamlin park on border of Lake Forest Park/Shoreline. Let me know if you have a minute to shoot the shirt and check this awesome work out in the flesh.

If you look closely the new filler I installed has a thin rubber gasket as well as a 3/8 ABS spacer that came with the filler. That coupled with the Bedliner as another "gasket" I think I'm safe. I filled up last night at the station and it worked just like stock.

Fiance has been out of town for work for a couple weeks and is back now so no work today, possibly tomorrow? Ill let ya know. I'm still on the fence about tackling the flippac project 4 days before the overland rally but will see. Your certainly welcome to stop in sometime after work and have a beer.

Well getting ready to head to the Overland show and realized this will be the first time is 6 years I'm not sleeping in my RTT since I sold it recently. I decided I would make a "Ghetto" soft top so I can sleep on the bed and have some shade in the hot sun. Its completely temporary and more of a wonder what it would like thing. Banged it out in a couple hours though so I don't have any real attachment to it. Will see how it works this weekend.

Amazing work on that bed! I like the black wheels (the gray idea is really cool too) but were they hard to balance with the bedliner on them?

One thing I noted though is that the LEDs seem to be on an angled section- LEDs tend to be more directional than regular bulbs and those thin strips kind of get lost visually in the black of the bedliner (meaning folks are less likely to notice them in a casual glance) so I'd make sure that folks behind you can see them well. Some side marker lights would make you more visible at night.
