Those of you with Limb Risers and HAM antennas

:iagree: lmfaoo!

I mounted mine on my roof rack with diamond k9000 motorized antenna mount. Antenna stays down (safe) ant out of the way. Put it up when you need it. Pretty slick setup.

I've had the k9000 on my wishlist for a while, but it requires a roof-rack as a pre-requisite.... lol. I read into them though and found that even in the up position, if enough pressure is put against them, an internal clutch gives allowing it to lay over. Is this correct? Also, do you just use a non-ground antenna on it?

Both are correct. You can use them without a roof rack. They make lots of varieties. Trunk mounts, gutter mounts, luggage rack mounts etc. I youre creative you can find a way to mount it.

I am about to have a radio and get my license, just do seeing why not mount the antenna on like te tore carrier like most CB antennas?

There's not much ground plane on a tire carrier, but it can be done with a 1/2-wave antenna. The 2 meters antenna on one of my trucks is on the spare carrier, but it doesn't have near the range or performance as my other truck with a 1/4-wave antenna on the (metal) roof.

Mount to the rear of the JK. There are various mounts available that will allow you to mount to either corner, behind the spare wheel or to the third brake light. I'm running limb risers on my 2dr JK and here's my antenna mounted:

Let's hear more about the Kevlar rope. That see,s to be an instant fix for antennas that want to be put up front to get the hood's ground plane.

The problem is that if you're taking your vehicle off-road then the hood is really not the best place for the antenna to be.

Certainly not for a 2m or the like permantly attached to the bumper or edge of hood. But I think a shorter mag mount in the middle of the hood just for the run would be fine (assuming we can solve the interference from metal limb risers). On a run, I need only to reach the leader and tail gunner. My rubber duckt on a good hand held will probably do that. I just want an ext ant for clarity and strength of signal. After the runs, I just put it inside.

I have a full roof rack w stuff attached that makes it very difficult to use my roof for antennas. I can put them at one end or the other but the absence of any ground plane to its opposite side will make almost a directional antenna.

BTW, I answered my above question. I went to the Amazon link provided on p. 2. I can get a 30' coil of 3mm in tan; or I can get a 15' length in black. The former has a 900-lb tensile strength, the latter 400-lbs. I want black; so, I'll hope I don't run into a 401-lb limb.

A new dilemma is how to secure the ends. With wire I can seize the eyes with squeeze-together lead thingys. With braided cord, I don't think that will work. If the cord is hollow, I could weave any eye splice as we do for synthetic winch rope, but I donno. There's bound to a way the marine folks secure the eye splices. I just need to find out how. I don't wanna use U-bolts that, under tension, could tear loose and make a nice head-slicer-upper.

You could, I guess. I used a mag-mount when I first installed a CB in the rig but I found it a PITA. It scratched the hell out my paint and having it in the middle of the hood would be quite distracting. What makes you not want to mount at the rear of your Jeep?

This is what is on my spear gun, and I've had some pretty epic battles in the rocks. Still using the same piece that has been on it for decades. Shows just a very slight fuzziness in a couple of spots. It also doesn't seem to stretch.
They have thinner Kevlar rope as well.
