My taco will be coming up on the 80K mark this summer...Can anyone tell me who sells a kit that would contain all the parts for a timing belt change? (at a good price of course) Also I will change the water pump at the same time. Any suggestions comments/mods during this time?:Mechanic:

When it comes to belts & water pumps... I wouldn't install anything but OEM... especially given the amount of work it takes to change the timing belt and water pump in this case. Your local dealership should have everything you would need.

I've seen conflicting reports on the 3.4ltr. Some say change it at 60K some say 90K.

I changed mine at 60K and recently again at 120K. At 120K the belt was ok but my water pump had a small leak. So even if the belt is ok, it's still worth looking at the water pump at certain mileage intervals.

Anything but OEM? Why's that? I'm due for this service too.

I'm thinking he meant "wouldn't install anything but OEM". My recollection of the 3.4 is 90k as well for timing belt and water pump.

When does the Toyota want ya to change it out????....I heard it was over 90K????

90K is whats recommended. I like to be ahead of the game and besides it will be summer and working in the garage will be a bit more comfortable. I figure when it hits 90k it will be winter again.
I will most definitely use OEM parts. I was just looking for a good website that sells OEM kits for this..

I've done six of these on my and friend's trucks, all at just over 100K, and every one of them looked almost new when I took it off. I wouldn't do it 'til 90K at least, if not more. One friend is at 140K and we took the upper belt cover off to look at it, and it still looked fine.

I would go with OEM, just because Toyota does such a good job in the first place, why mess with it. I've ordered from Toyota of Dallas, and they are great (good prices and good service). I've also ordered from this place http://www.toyautoparts.com/TAC-4WDV6-002_1999_parts.html . It is very cheap and the parts are OEM, but it's strictly over the net and their customer service is nonexistent. They're fine if you know exactly what you need, and they do have kits

The new water pump will come with a rigid gasket. They are better than the Toyota gasket material. There are also ways to compress the hydraulic tensioning piston without taking it off the truck (which requires removing the AC compressor-and is a pita).

Good luck.

The issue with aftermarket is light differences that make a big deal. I have installed aftermarket kits in the past on different vehicles and there are noticable differences. I strongly second the OEM recommendation. You can shop around between your local dealers and some off discounts and 4WD discounts. They are businesses just like everyone else...

Thanks for the link- that may be what I am looking for.. I've done them before several times on freinds trucks-but this is MY truck so it gets nothing but the best.

So did he X-Ray it on the truck?

They don't fail from the outside in they fail and stretch from the inside out. There is a fabric layer that is the real strength of the belt and that’s what you can't see looking at the belt.

I don't care what they look like I replace them at 90k. The motor may not be a zero clearence but it sure sucks changing a timing belt in the mud in the middle of the woods. :(
