Tire warranty coverage?

I just purchased 2 full sets plus 1 for out lr3 and l322. I opted to get the road hazard etc. at Discount tire. Thinking about getting that back as the tires are not installed yet. Reason being they just cover a portion (prorated) for the damaged tire. Much past new, I would need 4 or 5 anyway. The warranty is about $40 a tire. I usually waive it but got it this time. Thoughts?

Its a crap shoot, really. I've had to warranty one tire after my winch cable wrapped around it at 50mph (btw don't do this as this sucks significantly).

I always get the tire warranty because it seems like when I don't it all goes to crap. However it might just be my luck. Also depends on how long you keep your tires. I go through a set of tires on my DD about once every 2~3 years. On my 109, I'll go A LOT longer between tires.

It kind of depends on the tire, and your use as to the risk associated. I always get it, and generally get my moneys worth. No prorate crud and other fees with discount tire typically.

I have never had Discount prorate a tire once. They have always replaced them flat out no questions asked. I have had damn near a dozen replaced over the last four or so years.

Best $40 you could spend.

There are two different "Discount Tire" businesses: "Discount Tire Company" (which does not prorate) and "Discount Tire Center" (which does prorate).

In Southern California, "Discount Tire Company" (the one you have in PHX) operates under the "America's Tire Company" name. I'm guessing that Discount Tire Center had the name locked up before Discount Tire Company came to town, so they had to find a different name. I'm not sure if it's the same deal in TN (where the OP is from).

IMO, the road hazard from Discount Tire Company / America's Tire Company is worth the $$$. The last set of BFG MT's I had paid for a lifetime worth of road hazard from them. 3 of the 4 were replaced due to sidewall failures.

I opted to forgo them as they would be prorated for the cost. Also, the print says offroad failures not covered. Granted it comes down to the store's service managers. The biggest thing was I had to warranty every tire or none. The justification being "we would not which tire was warrantied", in reality it should have been ok to buy one warranty and only have the option to replace one tire, once. That was how my first purchase from the online portion of Discount Tire (Discount Tire Direct) three years ago went.

Since after any real wear I would need all four tires anyway, I passed onthe $46 per tire x 5 covereage to recieve prorated hazard coverage for a $260 dollar tire. I may regret it, but I specifically asked about the prorated amount etc. It seemed I would need two unrepairable tires to come out ahead.

Do it!!! I actually didn't have a warranty on any of my 5 mud tires until I slashed a sidewall after 1 year of wheeling. I took my truck into Discount Tire, paid about $375-$400 to replace the single trashed tire and then proceeded to spend $40-45ea. on all 4 other tires to prevent this from happening again. Later that week while swapping out my tires, I found a slash that went through the tread block and into the casing so I went back to Discount Tire and they replaced that for me for $40-45. Money WELL spent. Unfortunately I didn't just pony up the cash for the warranty at time of purchase, could saved myself hundreds!!! Oh well, I'm covered now!

How did you handle the difference in wear? Or was this an offroad set/low mileage and wear?

That's definitely not the "Discount Tire Co." road hazard warranty we're used to seeing.

Out west (well, CA, AZ, & CO - where I have dealt with them) they cover the tire regardless of how or where the damage occurred. On road, off road, vandalism, collision . . . any non-repairable damage gets replaced (100% - not prorated) under the warranty, no questions asked, as long as it has legal tread depth (5/32" ???), and is less than 10 years old (I've been told that's a DOT thing).

If it is repairable, then they repair it for free - even if you didn't buy the tires from them.

Even with the replacement, no questions asked, I would be outlaying $46 a tire ($230) for the coverage. I would only have $30 in savings over a new tire. Then I have to buy the warranty for the replacement tire. It seems the policy is not the same out here
