TLC has diesel news

As far as I know, parts availability is good for these engines. The transmission depends on the exact application, either the H55F Toyota 5 speed or a NV4500. We don't recommend an Auto trans for the swap.

Sounds good to me!!

Ujoint,

I like the idea of the h55. It makes it an easier swap, for a 60 series. Is TLC putting out the adaptors such as tranny to engine, and the motor mounts? I think you guys would have a nice niche market there with a kit. Or is that a Advanced Adaptor product.

Also, what is the pricing for a new engine, thru TLC?

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions.

At this time, it's an install only, we won't be selling any of the components. I don't know if there are plans to ever do so, this is all very new.

Anybody have specs and info for the 2.8 such as power, torque, weight?

Is it intercooled?

What applications did it come in? I'm used to looking for P30 trucks for the 4bt but I have no idea what chassis used the 2.8.

The infamous 2.8!

It is virtually the same engine as the 300Tdi, but a redesigned version, produced by MWM in South America. Power number are quite impressive:

I personally think it is one of the 'ideal' engines for a cruiser with one caveat, parts are not available/stocked in the US, they are all shipped over by special request. To me, this makes it equal to any Toyota swap, since parts will be the same difficulty to obtain. Not to mention the fact that it is a spendy motor at $7000, if you went OEM toyota route you would be money ahead. The 2.8 will require an adapter that retails for north of $800 (https://eshop.advanceadapters.com/commerce/ccc1180-hs-2-8l-tgv-diesel-engines.htm) on top of the engine cost which an OEM engine would not require.

I believe they are to release a 3.0 L diesel that will be used by the postal office in 2009/2010, but it has full electronics, which is a deal buster for me.

If we could get some a parts wharehouse in the US to stock parts, we would only have a week parts lag time, but as it is now expect multiple weeks to get any needed parts....per the International rep.

I'm having serious diesel envy right now:drool:

If it's not being delivered over the weekend, I'll get some myself. If not, I'm sure there are some pics somewhere. ---Chris

That motor is almost Identical to the VM MOTORI RA 428, 2.8L WHICH.....
is used in the JEEP LIBERTY, and will soon (may 08) be available here with epa approval and plug'nplay ready for the new gen tacos and fj cruiser.
This will likley even get past the smog nazis in kali. I for one can't wait.

Is this what they are talking about over at dieseltoyz?

Ra 428

Hey Chuck

Yes this is the same unit they are talking about at Diesel Toyz. It has been used for years in Europe for a multitude of vehicle platforms. It has even been used (an earlier version) by Toyota in Europe for thier version the SWB landcruiser mid 80's to early 90's, looked like a 70 series but could be an lj series. Google: vm motori italy.

The same motor is already here in the Jeep Liberty but has run afoul in a few states due to stricter diesel emission standards(see wikipedia). Hard to believe that a much older diesel (Toy) has been approved for use by TLC in Calf, but this engine, esp. with biodiesel won't pass emissions???? SEEMS CRAZY!

The kit Diesel Toyz will offer seems like the solution we have all been waiting
for, decent fuel economy and power in a reasonable sized truck / suv with parts available here....see your dodge dealer. When compared to the current taco 05+ this power plant seems to fall in between the 4cyl and the 6cyl HP Wise and has tons of torque. With tweaking and other upgrades, chips, prop.
injection etc you could easily have a go fast unit.

HERES HOPING THIS IS A GO!:jumping:

No offense to anyone considering the 2.8 TGV, but what are the advantages of this engine over a factory Toyota diesel or even a Cummins?

I admit the specs of the TGV are nice but they are about the same as a 4BT Cummins. As mentioned by someone else, parts are going to be difficult to find and weeks out if you have to order them. Domestically, a Cummins part can be found at most national chains or direct from Cummins across North America.

Advance Adapters has had the bellhousing adapter for the TGV for a few years now. Last I heard, they had only sold a few and mainly to TLC.

I have owned quite a few diesel Land Cruisers (still have 3) and at one point considered the TGV for a diesel project. I went with the Cummins 4BT instead because of parts availability and cost.

I still love the 4BT in Cruisers, however these days, I am leaning more to keeping a Cruiser all Toyota. The 4BT is not for everyone but I see a factory Toyota diesel a much better option than the International. Sure, parts are a little more difficult to find compared to a Cummins but not so hard as this International engine.

There is also something to be said for keeping a vehicle as simple as can be especially in an expedition/overland base. Having owned 2 custom built 4BT Cruisers, I don't think I would have ever taken either one of them outside of North America. Diesels are known for longevity but they do develop problems. When you are stuck out in the bush with an obscure drivetrain with a hodge podge of parts that is totally custom, you are SOL. Grant it, the world is becoming more technologically advanced and parts can be had in a relative short amount of time.

I know that Toyota diesels are across this planet. I personally would rather have a factory Toyota diesel in a Land Cruiser where I can find parts for it locally when I am very far from home.

Some would argue that Toyota diesels are hard to find parts for in North America. Yes, this is true but I imagine not as hard as the TGV. There are a handful of Toyota diesel parts suppliers here in the US. Also, a lot of parts can be found at local auto parts houses.

OK, ranting and hijacking over.

Toyota diesel

Hey Grease

Very well put, but....what does Toyota offer that will fit in a tundraor better
yet a tacoma or fj cruiser without a SAS and extensive mods/driveline fab.?
my apologies in advance for thread hijacking.
