To the Arctic Ocean via the Dalton Road

We drove from Chile across Northern Argentina flat and wide with cattle feedlots that stretch for miles as far as the eye can see. 1,500km of a road so straight we hardly needed to touch the steering wheel. But we had a destination, Iguazu Falls and wow we were not disappointed. Over 270 waterfalls and cataracts plunging down the 2km wide drop.

We are now waiting to see if we get approved for a Brazil visa. It is expensive and tough to get into Brazil with a Canadian Passport.

Heading South Brazil to Uruguay

We are sitting in our little camper in a little country called Uruguay. Not many overlanders travel here, it seems a bit undiscovered or perhaps its neighbors Brazil and Argentina just get all the attention. We visited the worlds largest hydroelectric dam in Brazil before heading south to Uruguay and what has amazed us most about this country is the 100's of antique cars and trucks on the road. Some in fantastic condition and others being held together with duct tape.

We are planning to be back in Canada sometime in December, although we hear that they are expecting the worst winter in 20 years in Canada. We are looking for any advice on Canadian shipping companies. We are planning to ship from Chile to Vancouver.

Uruguay A Country Full of Surprizes

Uruguay is a bit like Canada, a country sitting in the shade of huge powerful country. Except it is sitting in the shade of 2 huge powerful countries bordering with both Brazil and Argentina it seems a little forgotten and not on all overlander's routes. We were surprised to discover however it is now the global hang out for jet setters millionaires and billionaires who can find solitude away from the paparazzi on its stunning beautiful beaches and sipping Uruguayan wines.

When we left Canada we first headed to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska the most northern city we could drive to. Then we turned south and headed for the most southern town in the world that one can drive to Ushuaia in Argentina. So we had an exciting moment today when we saw our first sign to Ushuaia, wow can't believe our destination we set out for 16 months ago is getting nearer. We should be there sometime in the next week or two.

We Arrived in Ushuaia

Driving along the east coast of Argentina we headed south our destination the world's most southern town one can drive to. We spent a few days exploring Buenos Aires before heading south. What a fabulous city and it does in deed remind us of Europe, unlike any American city we have been in. We visited the burrowing parrots, southern right whales, sea lions, penguins as we traveled south. A long straight road nearly 3000km to the end of the earth.

One of the claims of Buenos Aires is having the widest city street in the world, it is 16 lanes wide

Uruguay Architect

Hi Craig
Yes we were amazed at the various types and styles of buildings in Uruguay. We said the architects must be busy in this country, everything from thatched cottages, to modern sleek clean styles. Certainly the most interesting architectural country we have traveled through. No Canadian box styles houses in every subdivision here, all looking the same.
Cheers

Overlanders Do Ecuador and Peru

We have completed our Ecuador and Northern Peru video, it shows a few overlanders we meet on route and also shows how inventive one becomes after traveling so long.
We loved Ecuador and Peru great countries to overland across.

Heading North Through Chile and Argentina

Once we reached Ushuaia we turned North and began the journey back to Canada. We met up with Espen and Malin (UnUrban) in Puntas Arenas and together celebrated our journeys swopping travel tales.

We visited Torres del Paine in Southern Chile, and although it was windy and cold we loved the wilderness and beauty of this part of the planet. We camped in the shadow of the mountains and were treated to both an amazing sunset and sunrise.

The Perito Moreno Glacier had Tom back in geologist heaven. The advancing glacier cracks and shudders as it plows its way down the valley pushing mountains aside. Quite different from glaciers in North America most of which are receding.

The mountaineers mecca is Fitz Roy in Argentina. We were lucky again with weather and another "cloud failure" so were treated to a stunning clear view.

We headed north on the "tourist adventure road" Argentina's south famous route 40. However the road must have been significantly improved since its beginning as the speed alone tells us it is really a good road as our average speed was about 50km per hour. The worst was the dust, and the detours where they are tarring the road. Soon the days of any adventure will be over while driving this road.
Route 40

The highlight was visiting the Cuevas de Las Manos the ancient rock art of hands believed to date back to over 7000BC. Actually it was once we got off route 40 and headed down side roads that we faced some challenging driving.

We crossed over the Andes and into Chile and headed north up the Carretera Austral also known as route 7 and this is when we were faced with interesting roads and driving and our average speed dropped significantly. It is also surrounded by stunning scenery and was one of our best drives in South America.
