Chile An Overlanders Heaven

We have updated our blog of our experiences in Southern Chile what an amazing country and should be on every overlanders to do list. It is a country of wilderness, wild coasts, fjords, rain forests, volcanoes, glaciers, hundreds of waterfalls, lakes and more. Driving is challenging and we did more 4X4 driving since we arrived in South America and the Nissan did fabulous.

We were really fortunate to experience an erupting volcano, listening to it thunder and then belch the ash and fumes. The roads and border was closed as well as the airports in Buenos Aires across the continent.

Seeing a town devastated by a volcano was heart breaking. Listening to the locals struggles with trying to rebuild inspiring

We are now near Santiago and preparing to end our journey. We will be shipping the Nissan and camper back to Canada if all goes well

Central Peru Video

We have posted our video of our journey through Central Peru, what an amazing country. It is here that we had to seek out a Off Road Specialist to do a replacement of the Air Ride Suspension, fortunately we find one of the best in South America. A team that actually prepared a vehicle for the Dakar Rally

Safe travels always

I've been enjoying your travels too, and have been dying to ask - are you both originally from South Africa? You sure sound like it!

Yes we are both from South Africa. Tom worked as an mineral exploration geologist working all over Southern Africa before we immigrated to Canada. It was while working and living in the bush we learnt the lessons of serious off roading, and living in the wilderness.

Pleased you enjoy our travels, now we are thinking where to next once?

Aah ok. I had mistakenly gotten the impression you were originally from Canada. I kept telling myself there was no way an adult Canadian could go live in Southern Africa for any length of time and then leave with a SA accent :)

I'd like a nice tour of India, but will take whatever I get :)

Yes India is right up there on our list of places to see. What we are debating is how best to explore Asia. Overlanding across Africa is pretty simple for most it is the route Cape to Cairo, (East Route) or for the more adventurous Cape to Morocco (West Route). Across the Americas just about any route is possible as the infrastructure is pretty good in most places. Asia is has a lot more difficult borders and water crossings so we are still undecided how to see this continent. But we will get there one day.

The End of Our America Overland Journey and Where to Next

We we are returning home back to Canada. After 17 months on the road traveling over 63,000km it is time to return back to family and friends. I felt a huge sense of sadness as we watched our truck being loaded into a shipping container in Santiago. As we walked away however I heard Tom mutter something about a "silk road' so who knows where our next overland journey will be.

Here is the video of the truck being loaded into a shipping container destination Vancouver. Tom and I will be in Vancouver in January to be reunited with our Nissan which has been an amazing overland vehicle .

We will now reflect on some of the best and worst of our experiences traveling across the Americas in future blogs. After a Christmas break with family and friends we will update our website with more information on traveling the Americas based on our experiences. One thing we learnt for sure that overlanding across the Americas is very different than overlanding across Africa. Ever wondered which one you would do if you had to choose between them?

Safe travels all

Thanks for all the memories and chats while you were on the road. It has been a great journey. Even if I weren't riding with you, I was with you in spirit. Now, lets figure out where to go next. ;-)
