To whom it may concern

Dear Land Rover
FYI, speaking for many, we would like for diesel engines to be offered ASAP.
Thanks

Doesn't that just chap your ***? I haven't done the math with a Land Rover, but I took MPG data from the UK Toyota website and converted it to US measurement. If I remember correctly a new diesel Land Cruiser was worth 28 MPG, a crew cab 4x4 Hilux was 29 MPG. I would imagine that a diesel LR4 would be worth at least 30 MPG.

How could a 30+ MPG SUV not sell in the USA?

Although I would love to see Land Rover, Toyota and many others bring diesel motors into the US, I would suggest you don't hold your breath. Here are a few reasons "IMHO" you will not see this happen anytime soon. First, you need to pass emissions in all 50 states. California is a real PITA and was the reason Land Rover did not bring in the 300 tdi in the mid 90's . Second, and biggest is MOST US drivers do not want diesels, period! Especially woman who influence most vehicle purchases. Like me, you are a very small minority. Most drivers want V6,V8 gas motors. VW is a good example to look at, yes they bring in Diesel cars but it is a total token boutique offering. They may have one on their lot if you are lucky but if you want anything special be ready to wait. They can sell every diesel car they produce outside the US. They don't care if they sell a single one here. It's a PITA to them. They do it simply for marketing. I'm sorry to say but you are preaching to the choir my friend. If you want a diesel they are available. Just completed a 1995 Discovery 1 conversion. Not the easiest but done and very happy with the results. Sorry to be such a downer.

All the best

i did see your conversion and its awesome.
I think that the main reason for our diesel-less LR is the bottom dollar.
The clean technology is here, just expensive.
Mercedes has offered the clean diesel option for many years.
Also, i have looked at the VW Tourag diesel and i just cant come to terms with dropping 60k on a VW.

I just think it is crazy that i can go to just about any other country, pick up a 15 year old defender 110 for a few grand. Yet for a 25 year old one, we are looking at at least 20k for a beater here.

With the new European emission regs, hopefully we will have some here in a few years.

I'm not entirely sure how true that is, from what I've read the few diesel models available in the USA sell quite well. Just look at the resale value of a TDi Jetta, Touareg, Bluetech Mercedes, etc vs a similar gas model. I briefly looked at the Touareg, diesel models are nearly double the price of similar gas models. I think that an automaker willing to take the gamble would do quite well, ESPECIALLY with a truck or SUV.

Jeep Grand Cherokee is getting a diesel next year...to bad that platform has such little aftermarket support. I think with changing mpg rquirements, changing euro regs, and the changing attitude towards all things diesel in the US we are likely to see more diesels in the states in the coming years. Just compare the number of audi/vw, mercedes, and bmw diesels currently offered here compared to what was available just a few years ago. I remain hopeful.

Oh and Jarek I signed that petition and also made my girlfriend and her sister sign it as well...they looked at me like I was crazy though.

If you want to complain to someone, complain the the US government. Their stupid non-scientifically based regulations on NOx are preventing most vehicles from being diesels.

Thats a part of it, but many in the US still remember the belching, noisy, stinking diesels such as those put out by GM back in the day...tough to shake that rep but its slowly happening. Some endorsements from the green crowd doesnt hurt either.

i think the diesels are just as clean as gas when the proper emission equipment is added. Also, I am earning for 30 mpg in proper 4x4. Who wouldn't want that?

I signed the petition too,... great idea

Anyway, the oil speculators will drive up a barrel to over $150 this spring.
Gasoline will be over $5.50/gallon again.
