19th stage: Contador attacks
The 19th stage featured several attacking moves by Alberto Contador. He raced alone ahead of the leaders up most of the Alpe d'Huez, but faltered in the last km and finished third. Contador's effort lifted him to 7th place, 3:55 behind new race leader Andy Schleck. How different this Tour might have been if Contador had not lost 1:20 on the race's first stage when the road was blocked by a major crash. Contador crashed on several other occasions, injuring his knee in the process.
Contador faces doping charges from evidence collected in 2010. The Spanish sports authority cleared Contador earlier this year, but there was considerable pressure on the judges. Even the Spanish prime minister urged the judges to clear Contador, who is a Spanish national hero. The international cycling federation has appealed the decision. If the appeal goes against Contador, he will be stripped of his victory in last year's Tour, and his win in the Tour of Italy in May 2011. The decision will come in the next few weeks.
Tomorrow's individual time trial will be crucial in deciding the places of the top three riders. Andy Schleck leads brother Frank by 53 seconds, and Cadel Evans by 57 seconds. Of the three, Evans is the better time trialist, so overall victory is still within the realm of possibility for Evans. Another wild card is Thomas Voeckler, who is 2:10 back. It's conceivable that Voeckler, who proudly wore the race leader's yellow jersey for half the race, could catch Frank Schleck for third place overall.
