Towing Nightmare!! 7.3 Help Needed??

Two Part Post.
Part 1 Towing nightmare!!
Part 2 Looking for 7.3 help?

So I am driving my van today. Recently I have only been driving it between my two business locations. Less than 70 mi per week.
It starts running rough with no power. I have a chance to pull into a parking lot but then it smooths out and seems fine so I push my luck. I am soo close to my destination. Going up a hill now it starts running rough then seems fine then goes rough then stalls just short of being able to make a turn off the main (4 lane road) on to a side street. I partially make the turn but tail is still completely in one of 2 east bound lanes..
Cannot restart at all. 20-30 min later Flat bed arrives. Driver starts winching truck up bed. Gets it all the way up, sets chains on rear axle starts winching again to tighten them up. We hear a loud snap!!! My truck rolls down steep flat bed and starts down hill into on coming traffic. Truck driver just stands there completely dumbfounded by what just happened. My wife looks like the scream painting with both hands on the side of her face. They might as well have had cement blocks on their feet. As truck passes me backward I start sprinting. Manage to jump on side step and smoothly dive into passenger door. Truck is accelerating down hill I barley get to it before it is going too fast for me to catch. I slither to drivers side and slam on the brakes stopping the truck. It was turning slightly so it made its way up a curb. When I get out I look and it cleared a telephone pole on the right side by less than a foot!! Behind it is another pole about a foot and a half to two feet behind it!!
Tow truck driver is white as a ghost and shaking!! He can barely complete full sentences!! I really think 1/4 of a second later and it would have been in the poles.. SOOO Lucky!!
Police show up and cannot believe what happened. Driver is so flustered he starts to just drive away with out his chains to either get another truck or cable. I yell across street and he comes back and we decide we should use a chain to at least pull my van off the main road.. We get it safely off the road. Later driver comes back with fixed truck and we get it home!!

Driver was so shaken I felt bad for him!! Gave him some lunch money and he goes on his way! I hope that he took the rest of the day off!
Could have been so much worse.

Part 2 So need to find out why 95 7.3 will not start.
Any suggestions as to where to start diagnostic wise??
It cranks but no sigh of starting. Something on the oil side?? ICP, IPR, HPOP?
Maybe has not been idling as well as normal for the last week. I chalked it up to the colder temps of late..
Being a van its hard to dig into so I want to get an idea of what to check before I start tearing things apart..
Thanks

Best guess would be Glow plugs... Or glow plug relay. Just ordered a set from DieselORings.com for my 7.3 because it was a bear to start. Clouds white smoke etc.

Next, fuel delivery issue... Filter or ?

Air leak?

Can't comment on what's wrong with your rig
Had a similar experience on a steep hill but it was my car AND the tow truck rolling down the hill tethered and backwards... My driver however was Indiana jones and saved everything with a few feet to spare... I ending up giving him a 30 pack

Glow plugs and glow plug relay will never cause driveability issues once running. They only come into play during cold starts.

intermittent stalling / rough running , random no-start

Change out the crank sensor, first and foremost.

Sounds like air could be getting mixed with the diesel - check for air leaks.
Perhaps also a fuel pump issue causing fuel starvation

I hadn't thought about the CPS, it has been quite a learning curve working on a diesel van after 25 years of working on gasers.

Glow plugs only impact cold starts and first few minutes of running... Could be more than one issue.

Pull your air filter so you can get at the fuel injection pump relays. I couldn't get mine to start even though I had fuel, etc. I pulled those connectors off an gave them a bit of a scraping and then it was good to go. If they're working, when you turn the key on you should hear a nice solid "thunk" coming out of them. Might be a dead end, but it's a cheap check.

CPS. (CAMshaft tho, not CRANKshaft LOL) Bet a beer that's it. Perfect symptom description. Intermittent loss of power that gradually worsens followed by a total fail followed by a no-start. There's not always the warning of running poorly, sometimes they just won't start one day. Don't worry, it's cheap and easy. Those in the know keep a spare CPS in the glovebox. IIRC new from Ford is like ~$30 now and the International dealer has them too! Don't waste time or $ on anything but the dealer item. Dark Blue is the color you want. There's dark blue (newest) gray (the original revision) and black (recalled in the 90s). Double check all that, been a while since I fooled with one cuz it just runs too good. 2002 CC DRW 70k

EDIT: Go here. Do this. It's easy.

I wouldn't use that towing company anymore after a pants-filling experience such as that.
It sounds like they need a better maintenance schedule on their equipment. Plus from the photos their truck might be a bit undersized for your sweet rig.

As someone who has a slightly bigger truck (Intl MDT), I have a short list of towing companies locally/regionally that I use if I run into problems or need to retrieve more source material/bulk spare parts.
I will get out of the way and wait until one of them can fish me out because I know they maintain their equipment and they have the right sized equipment for the job (not just the big ones).

There HAS to be a good, yet reasonable, towing company in your part of the Island.

Wow, close call! Glad you were able to spring into action. The running issue could be many things.. Does it have a frame mounted fuel pump?

Fuel pump is mechanical (1995). It is new as of about 1 yr ago when I fixed my fuel leak.
Changed out cps today still no start. Will dig deeper tomorrow.
