I agree it was, and glad the 5th Gen appears to be more off-highway friendly in stock trim. However, I would observe that the reason the 4th Gen 4Runner went in that direction was because that was were the market demand was. More ‘mall crawler’ from the (former?) SUV buying masses that really didn't care to go off-highway.


snip... The 4th gen 4Runner was a huge step towards being another Explorer. Bigger, lower and of course a V8 (b/c it now needs it). snip...

That market is taken care of by the Hilander... The only real difference I can see is marketing. Five years ago I would have only thought GM would try and market an ifs/irs vehicles as an "off roader" by slapping an H4 badge on it. You think that Toyota would try and pull this anywhere else in the world? Doubtful...
